'After The Flood' Floats Back to BritBox for Season 2
BritBox sets a premiere date for the return of mid-apocalyptic crisis series 'After the Flood.'
April showers bring May flowers, but they can also cause flooding. BritBox is clearly taking that old chestnut to heart, booking the return engagement for Season 2 of After the Flood for the latter half of April. The series, which debuted to rave reviews in early 2024, just aired Season 2 on ITV across the pond in January 2026; clearly, with the return of spring warmth, it’s just washing across the Atlantic along with the snowmelt.
The first season of After the Flood dropped viewers into the fictional town of Waterside, where climate change has triggered what should be a survival bit of British rain into a once-in-a-thousand-year flood. The series focused on PC Jo Marshall (Sophie Rundle), who witnesses unprecedented heroism from her community before stumbling across a dead body that no one wanted to accidentally be lifted out of its hiding spot in a garage. While the show focused on the whodunit to drive the story forward, the real drama was in watching humans attempt to continue business as usual in the face of apocalyptic conditions and mass tragedy.
Season 2 thankfully does not have a second thousand-year flood hit the town in two years. Instead, the threat Waterside faces (other than the continued flooding from the original disaster) is everyone’s other favorite climate-fueled apocalyptic horror: wildfire.
Here’s the Season 2 synopsis:
The second series of After the Flood finds newly promoted detective Jo Marshall on the trail of a baffling new murder investigation. As tensions simmer in Waterside amid the rising threat of moorland fires and the subsequent risk of further flooding, a body is discovered in bizarre circumstances. Jo's race to stop the killer brings her into direct conflict with powerful, influential forces within the town, ultimately drawing her into an investigation that becomes deeply personal. One that will require her to operate in secret if she is to have any hope of rooting out the corruption that has blighted the town's police force - and her own family - for decades.

The returning cast is led by Sophie Rundle (Happy Valley) as DS Jo Marshall; Nicholas Gleaves (The Crown) as her boss, Sergeant Phil Mackie; Lorraine Ashbourne (Bridgerton) as her mother, Molly Marshall; Philip Glenister (Belgravia) as Jack Radcliffe; and Matt Stokoe (Bodyguard) as Jo’s husband, Pat Holman. The supporting cast returning for Season 2 includes Tripti Tripuraneni (House of the Dragon), Heider Ali (Death on the Nile), Leo Flanagan (Gentleman Jack), Jacqueline Boatswain (Still Up), Faye McKeever (Adolescence), George Bukhari (Ridley), and no-longer-a-newcomer Maui Connock.

Season 2 will also add a small roster of high-profile A-listers, befitting the show’s status as one of ITV’s biggest hits of 2024. They include Jill Halfpenny (Everything I Know About Love) as new addition DS Sam Bradley; Alun Armstrong (Sherwood) as Alan Benson; Ian Puleston-Davies (D.I. Ray) as Tony Rower; and Matthew McNulty (The Jetty) as Xav Palmer. Supporting cast additions include Oliver Nelson (Home Fires), Roger Morlidge (Call The Midwife), Tony Marshall (Sister Boniface Mysteries), and Lola Brown (Licorice Pizza).
Series creator Mick Ford (Stay Close) returns as lead writer on the second season; Azhur Saleem (Doctor Who) will also return to direct Episodes 1-3. Ford is also an executive producer, alongside Nicola Shindler & Richard Fee for Quay Street Productions, Huw Kennair-Jones for ITV, and Robert Schildhouse & Stephen Nye for BritBox International.
After the Flood Season 2 will debut on BritBox on Thursday, April 23, 2026, and stream one episode a week to follow through the end of May.
