Like Doctor WhoDeath in Paradise turns over leads every few years, though not because the demands of being the most famous Time-and-Space traveler can wear on you, but because of the commute. Filmed on location on the island of Guadaloupe, one of the many Caribbean islands that were annexed by various European countries, the tropical locale has always been part of the show's appeal: Showcasing crimes being solved in an island paradise, typically by a pale-skinned Englishman who views the place as his own personal hell.

Switching to a Black actor in the role by casting Don Gilet as the series's 5th lead actor in 13 seasons somewhat upends the series' premise, but makes up for it by opening fresh storytelling avenues to explore. It helps that St. Marie is still a double-digit hour flight away from home in London, and that Gilet's DI Mervin Wilson also considers the island a version of his own personal hell – even if it's more an emotional issue than desperately trying to avoid doing a lobster impression.

Season 14 of Death in Paradise saw Wilson start to finally settle down on the island as well, making space for other longtime characters to take the spotlight. Season 15 will still see the detective feeling like he doesn't really belong, but there's a sense that, for once, our detective is really trying.

Here’s the Season 15 official synopsis:

As DI Mervin Wilson continues to adjust to life in Saint Marie, he and the police team must face a myriad of baffling cases. Whilst attempting to connect with his recently discovered half-brother Solomon, Mervin’s newfound familial happiness soon turns to frustration as he discovers the pair are not quite as similar as he hoped they might be.
Returning Commissioner Selwyn Patterson confronts the impact of his recent period of absence. After some tough love from old friend Catherine Bordey, he’s determined to win back the trust of the island. Meanwhile, Detective Sergeant Naomi Thomas and Officer Sebastian Rose help new recruit Sergeant Mattie Fletcher settle into the fold, which might be easier said than done, as shadows from her past begin to reveal themselves.

Don Gilet returns for his second full season as DI Mervin Wilson, co-starring alongside series stalwarts Don Warrington as Commissioner Selwyn Patterson and Élizabeth Bourgine as Catherine Bordey. Season 15 will also bring back Shantol Jackson as DS Naomi Thomas, as well as Season 14 additions Shaquille Ali-Yebuah as PC Sebastian Rose and Daniel Ward as Solomon Wilson, Mervin’s long-lost brother.

The main cast will also gain a newcomer to the station with Catherine Garton (The War Between the Land & the Sea) as the newly recruited Sergeant Mattie Fletcher.
