'A House of Dynamite' To Blow Up Theaters in October

It probably says a lot about our culture that the most successful female director in 2025 is one known for making super hardcore war films. American director Kathryn Bigelow became the only woman to ever win an Academy Award for directing with The Hurt Locker, a movie based on the horrors of the forever war in the Middle East, which by then was nearly a full decade in. She followed that up with Zero Dark Thirty, a fictionalized retelling of the assassination of Osama Bin Laden, landing her a second nomination.

Bigelow's return to military movies in A House of Dynamite is Netflix's most obvious contender for awards season, simply due to the director and the material. Awards bodies tend to favor those they like, and they appreciate Bigelow's approach to making films about the horrors of war and the stress of combat. This is a film that comes in as an assumed favorite, will follow the film festival circuit, debuting at the Venice International Film Festival and then across the pond at the Toronto International Film Festival before its October premiere. For most of those involved, nominations in 2026 are theirs to lose.

However, the first images raise questions about some of the awards hype surrounding the film. Not that they are bad; in fact, they look exactly as one expects them to. But the film has been marketed as being led by Idris Elba, another Academy favorite who has yet to win for Best Actor, and clearly a significant part of Netflix's forthcoming campaign. So, why are there no images of Elba included in the initial release?
