The Final Season of Netflix's 'The Empress' Will Get a Late 2026 Premiere

Fans of Netflix's popular German period drama will have to wait a bit longer to see the conclusion of Elisabeth I of Austria's story.

German period drama The Empress is one of Netflix's most delightful hidden gems, the rare historical series that has nothing to do with the Tudor family, the Regency period, or World War II, and which is all the better for it. The refreshing and romantic story of the daughter of a Bavarian duke who married an emperor for love, the show dramatizes the life of Empress Elisabeth I of Austria, one of the first figures who would be akin to what we'd one day recognize as a "celebrity royal". Haunted by depression, stalked by the press, and beloved by her people, her life is full of equal parts romance and tragedy.

The series's first season was a surprise hit for Netflix, winning an International Emmy for Best Drama Series. Its second, which launched in November of 2024, spent five weeks in the global Netflix Top 10. Its third and final season has been confirmed for a late 2026 premiere, meaning that — even in the best of all possible worlds — by the time we watch the conclusion of Franz and Sisi's story, nearly two years will have passed since we last saw them.

(The true worst part about the streaming revolution.)

The news of the release was announced during Netflix's recent 2026 showcase in Berlin, where the streamer introduced a slate of new German productions and confirmed that Season 3 would, in fact, be The Empress's last. Whether that means this final batch of episodes will go right up to Sisi's tragic end is unclear. But this kind of finality certainly makes it possible.

Here's the Season 3 synopsis.

Following the devastating Sardinian War, Emperor Franz returns a traumatized man, burdened by the guilt of losing thousands of young men on the battlefield. Elisabeth strives to help him, fighting passionately for her marriage while also championing what she believes is right for the empire—but to no avail. Resistance at court and her own declining health compel her to leave Vienna and embark on an unexpected adventure. In the six-part finale of this thrilling series, Elisabeth will make a fateful acquaintance that will forever alter her life and the future of Europe.

Alongside Lingnau and Froissant, returning faces for the series' final season include Melika Foroutan as Franz's mother Sophie; Johannes Nussbaum as his brother Maximillian; Josephine Thiesen as Princess Marie Charlotte of Belgium; and Runa Greiner as Countess Charlotte von Stubenberg. New faces joining the cast are Dejan Bućin as Count Andrássy; Merlin Sandmeyer as Konstantin von Hohenlohe; Marlene Burow as Terese; Nico Holonics as Otto von Bismarck; and Sebastian Blomberg as Emperor Wilhelm I.

Katharina Eyssen is back as showrunner for the series final season, with creative support from Robert Eyssen. Florian Cossen and Julia Langhof split directing duties. Executive Producers include Scarlett Lacey and Robert Eyssen, alongside Jochen Laube and Fabian Maubauch for Sommeraus Serien GmbH.

The Empress Season 3 is currently slated for a late 2026 premiere. Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Netflix.
