It's a truth universally acknowledged that many of the best TV shows you're probably not watching are in languages other than English. From The Law According to Lidia Poët and The Leopard to The Lady's Companion and The Empress, there's so much good drama to be found in the world of subtitles. And it was probably only a matter of time until HBO finally got into the act.

Hot on the heels of The Seduction, a.k.a. the network's take on Les Liaisons Dangereuses, comes Privilèges, a thriller set in a Parisian luxury hotel. The story follows Adèle Charki (Manon Bresch), an inmate who starts work at the lavish hotel known as the Citadel as part of a prison day-release program coordinated by the hotel's director (Melvil Poupaud). But shortly after arriving for her first shift, her world is turned upside down.

What follows is a story of manipulation and betrayal as Adèle struggles to navigate the many power dynamics at play in her new workplace and build a new future for herself. But as her relationship with her boss becomes increasingly fraught and dark, that might be much more difficult than she initially thought.

Here's the series' synopsis.

Young inmate Adèle Charki desperately accepts a bellhop position at the palatial Citadel as part of a day-release program run by the hotel’s all-powerful director, Édouard Galzain. But shortly after arriving for her first shift, Adèle is thrust into a not-so-secret power struggle where ambitious staff, influential guests, and outside networks all fight for control — turning the hotel into a breeding ground of manipulation and betrayal. As her relationship with Édouard quickly morphs into something more sinister, Adèle’s grit and ambition are crucial for her survival as she fights for a chance to redeem her future.

Alongside Bresch and Poupaud, the series' ensemble also includes Zar Amir Ebrahimi (Reading Lolita in Tehran), Nadia Benzakour (No Man's Land), Roxane Mesquida (Mademoiselle Holmes), Anne Azoulay, (The New Look), Anne Azoulay (Furies), Mila Michael (El Host), Sandor Funtek (In the Name of Blood), Stephanie Atala (Girls' Play), Nancy Marie-Claire (Deadly Tropics), and Aaron Kahn (The Substance).

The thriller is created, written, and directed by Marie Monge and Vladimir de Fontenay in their second collaboration since the 2020 series Vampires. Hugo Gélin produces it for Zazi Séries. Other members of the creative team include cinematographer David Cailley, composer Amin Bouhafa, costume designer Caroline Spieth, and casting director Michael Laguens.

Privilèges will premiere on Friday, March 27, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.
