Robson Green Boards 'The Northumbria Mysteries'

Robson Green has already booked his next police procedural, and this time it's a little closer to his hometown.

Robson Green in 'Grantchester' Season 10

When the history of Grantchester is written, there will be lots of ink spilled about James Norton’s departure, the show’s handling of Tom Brittney’s troubled character, and the all-too-brief reign of Rishi Nair. However, true fans know the series heart was always Robson Geordie Keating, and that, given the circumstances, Green would be welcome to continue solving crimes for viewers with or without random religious sidekicks.

The BBC is counting on it, actually, with its latest daytime commission, The Northumbria Mysteries. Like Hope Street, this is a daytime police procedural soap opera set in an area where the BBC hasn’t traditionally filmed before, as part of a new slate of commissions focused on underserved regions. Hope Street belongs to the slate of shows filmed in Northern Ireland; it will surprise no one that The Northumbria Mysteries is being filmed in Northumberland. On-location filming is planned for the area’s sweeping coastline and surrounding market towns. It’s part of the BBC’s latest move to commit to the North East region as one of its key “Creative Clusters.

The Northumbria Mysteries is one of several commissions announced for the area. However, most of the others are travel shows and nature documentaries, including Robson Green’s Weekend Escapes and Joanna Page’s Wild Life. Green, a Northumberland native, has championed the area on multiple specials over the last two decades, and there’s something full circle about his later career taking him back home to star as a crime-solving detective.

Here’s the synopsis for the new series:

DS Joe Ruby is a jack-of-all-trades whose life has been shaped by mistakes, regrets, and missed opportunities, who finds himself teamed up alongside Oxford-educated DI Rose O’Connell, a rarefied intellectual, a deep thinker with a brilliant mind and an ice-cool disposition.
In a classic odd-couple pairing, Joe and Rose combine their talents as they frustrate, confound, and ultimately surprise one another while unravelling a series of compelling crime mysteries.

Green is thus far the only cast member confirmed for the series; the actor who will play DI Rose O’Connell is expected to be announced in due course. The rest of the cast will most likely be announced closer to filming.

Directors Gordon Anderson (Good Ship Murder) and Duncan Foster (Coronation Street) are expected to split helming duties across the show’s eight episodes, with Lesley Douglas producing. Aschlin Ditta, Gordon Anderson & Chris Gascoyne serve as Executive Producers for Lonesome Pine, and Helen Munson for the BBC.

The Northumbria Mysteries is currently in pre-production in the U.K. and expected to begin filming in the late spring of 2026. The series’s first season is expected to debut on the BBC before the end of the year. It does not yet have an American distributor, but we expect BritBox to board this sooner rather than later.
