Dan Stevens Will Face Down 'The Terror: Devil in Silver' on AMC+ This Spring
The horror anthology's third season will adapt the bestselling novel by Victor LaValle.
The former stars of Downton Abbey have all gone on to work on a variety of interesting projects since the doors of Highclere Castle closed back in 2016. Lily James nabbed an Emmy nomination for playing Pamela Anderson. Ed Speleers was both a serial killer on You and Jean-Luc Picard’s son on Star Trek: Picard. Hugh Bonneville has kept busy with a raft of projects ranging from historical crime drama The Gold to the Paddington film franchise. But none of the former Downton family has been doing it quite like Dan Stevens.
In the years since he played Matthew Crawley, the former Downton heartthrob has done everything from Hollywood blockbusters (Disney’s live-action Beauty & the Beast, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire) and indie horror flicks (Apostle, The Guest) to high concept Marvel superhero properties (the delightfully esoteric Legion). And his latest offbeat role, as the lead of the third season of the critically acclaimed horror anthology series The Terror, is set to hit streaming this Spring.
Based on Victor LaValle’s novel of the same name, The Terror: The Devil in Silver is an atmospheric tale of a monster in an insane asylum that may or may not exist. Stevens plays Pepper, a working-class man who finds himself wrongfully committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital, an institution filled with the kinds of people society would rather forget. As he navigates unruly fellow patients, doctors with dark secrets of their own, and a strange entity that seems to feed on all the suffering that the hospital produces, he’ll have to navigate a hellscape where nothing is as it seems — and where the worst monsters of all may live inside him.

Here’s the synopsis.
Dan Stevens stars as Pepper – a working-class moving man who, through a combination of bad luck and a bad temper, finds himself wrongfully committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital – an institution filled with those society would rather forget. There, he must contend with patients working against him, doctors harboring grim secrets, and perhaps even the Devil himself. As Pepper navigates a hellscape where nothing is as it seems, he finds that the only path to freedom is to face the entity which thrives on the suffering within New Hyde’s walls – but doing so may prove that the worst demons of all live inside him.
Alongside Stevens, the third season of The Terror will also star Chinaza Uche (Dickinson), Hampton Fluker (Watson), Judith Light (Julia), John Benjamin Hickey (Mapplethorpe), Stephen Root (Succession), Marin Ireland (The Umbrella Academy), Philip Ettinger (Elementary), b (Twelfth Night), Aasif Mandvi (The Miniature Wife), CCH Pounder (3 Body Problem), Michael Aronov (Snowpiercer), and Hayward Leach (Elsbeth).

“Working shoulder to shoulder with Victor LaValle to bring his masterful novel to the screen has been an incredible experience, as his story is, yes—packed with death and horror—but also brimming with beauty and the flickering-yet-unassailable light of our fragile humanity,” showrunner Chris Cantwell (Halt & Catch Fire) said. “Our writing team expanded and enriched Victor’s pulse-pounding and profound themes, Karyn Kusama brought a brilliant cinematic eye to this very real, very frightening world, and we did it all under the accomplished, hallowed banner of Scott Free with a top-tier crew.
“It was a pleasure to return to my inveterate partnership with AMC, a place where, above all, characters and drama grip you tight and don’t let go. The Terror: Devil in Silver is no different, as this cast—helmed with grace and strength by Dan Stevens—imbues every one of our characters with dimension, empathy, and soul. You will love these people who very much come from your world. You will grieve with them, cheer for them, laugh with them, and of course fear for their very lives.”

The six-episode limited series is created and showrun by Cantwell, LaValle, and Karyn Kusama (Yellowjackets), with the latter directing the first two episodes.
All three also serve as executive producers alongside Stevens, Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker, and Clayton Krueger for Scott Free Productions; Alexandra Milchan for Emjag Productions; Guymon Casady for Entertainment 360; and Brooke Kennedy.
The Terror: Devil in Silver will premiere on Thursday, May 7, 2026, on AMC+ and Shudder, with new episodes rolling out weekly. The series will also air linearly on AMC later this year. Seasons 1 and 2 of The Terror are currently streaming on AMC+ and Shudder.
