Gabrielle Creevey & Eve Myles Go Toe to Toe in 'The Guest'
The Welsh Renaissance in the U.K. continues apace. Not every series funded by BBC Cymru and the Welsh Government is being made in dual languages (yet). Still, the number of Welsh writers and the presence of Welsh stars headlining regular BBC TV series have grown exponentially. Case in point, actor Eve Myles, who first rose to prominence in the Welsh soap Belonging and the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood (set in Cardiff, allowing her to use her natural accent). The more her star climbed, the fewer Welsh roles she played. However, that has changed recently, first with the dual-language series Keeping Faith and now with The Guest.
The Guest is not a dual language series, although BBC Cymru helped fund it. Hailing from the ultra-successful Quay Street Productions studio, the series was conceived by Welsh writer Matthew Barry (Industry) and surrounds Myles with Welsh co-stars, including the series' other lead actor, Gabrielle Creevey. In fact, one might say Creevey, an up-and-coming Welsh star who broke out towards the end of the 2010s in the TV series In My Skin, resembles something of a young Eve Myles from two decades ago when she was a fresh-faced Cardiff cop being confronted by alien life and Captain Jack Harkness.
Actually, how much Creevey looks like Myles when done up properly might just be the point. Check out the trailer.
