'Outlander: Blood of My Blood' Introduces Parallel Love Stories

Every good love story needs a little time travel. Or, at least, so says the Outlander franchise, which made its bones telling the story of a love for the ages that crossed centuries. Now, prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood is set to continue that tradition, and its trailer features everything that made the flagship series so popular: Longing glances, desperate declarations of emotion, and lush Scottish scenery.

The series depicts the love stories of the parents of the flagship series’ primary protagonists, told across dual timelines set in both 18th-century Scotland and World War I-era England. In one, we follow Jamie’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, whose romance we’re at least slightly familiar with thanks to Claire’s time at Castle Leoch back in Outlander’s first season. Fans know far less about the relationship between Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, merely that they died in a car accident when their daughter was just five years old.

The trailer does confirm something wildly interesting, however — that Claire's mother, Julia, also traveled through the same stones that would one day shape her daughter's life. This makes narrative sense, as the original series confirmed that Claire's time travel ability had to come from one of her parents. But it does make things a bit clearer when it comes to how the show will tie these two love stories together, given that they are technically centuries apart. It appears that the series will depict Ellen and Brian's star-crossed struggle to be together, alongside Julia and Henry's fight to reunite with each other. Swoon, indeed.
