'Silent Witness' Season 28's Trailer Confirms It Wasn't an Accident

As it has since 1996, Silent Witness will return to the BBC along with the brand new year. (Though the series has shifted around the calendar over the three decades since it launched, it tends to favor debuts in January/February, with the bulk of the seasons debuting in the first three months of their respective year.) The current record holder in the U.K. for the longest-running non-soap opera drama series, Silent Witness Season 28 promises not only to smash its own record but will finally find its leads engaged to be married.

Despite showing no signs of slowing down, Silent Witness struggled in its first decade on the air, with constant cast turnover, most notably between Seasons 7-14, the period when original lead Amanda Burton exited the series, and the remaining ensemble tried to figure out who could anchor the series, finally settling on characters Dr. Nikki Alexander and Dr. Jack Hodgson, whose on-screen chemistry turned the series into a 21st-century version of Moonlighting.

However, after going 13 seasons on the strength of the will-they-or-won't-they, Silent Witness finally stopped flirting with commitment, ending with a marriage proposal and turning the series into one centered on the engaged couple. Season 28 (and the already greenlit Season 29) will, therefore, bring new changes to the series, with the new season focusing on a "theme of love."
