It’s hard to know which we should appreciate more: the success of Wrexham AFC as a team or the success of Welcome to Wrexham as a TV series. In truth, the two are inextricably linked. When comedians Rob McElhenney (now known as Rob Mac) and Ryan Reynolds purchased the 5th-tier Red Dragons during the depths of the pandemic, the reality show it spawned was practically marketed as being part of the deal, turning the Club into “an underdog story the whole world could root for.” Even so, no one could have foreseen just how big a difference the new ownership and the fandom the show brought with it would make. The series has now been handed a three-season order through Season 8, officially taking it through the end of the 2020s.

The 3rd-oldest professional football club in the world, Wrexham FC hadn’t been successful since the late 1970s when Mac and Reynolds bought them. Yet, only five years into the project, the results are worthy of a Disney film: after failing to advance in Season 1, Seasons 2-4 have seen an historic three consecutive promotions for the Club, and Season 5 finds them knocking on the door of the Premier League, and a chance at a fourth consecutive promotion, a feat that has never been achieved in English Football League history.

Season 5 is still currently filming,* so it remains to be seen if Wrexham achieves success beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. But it's clear FX believes, even if they don't make it this year, they will soon enough.

*(The team is currently on the bubble to make the playoffs. According to our in-house expert, Sophie Brookover, based purely on the table standings of their opponents, they should win 3 of their final five matches, but anything can happen.)

Here’s the official synopsis for Season 5:

Having risen so quickly in the pyramid, with the eyes of the world turned to this once unknown town in Wales, fans and haters across the globe wait with bated breath to see whether the Wrexham experiment will make it all the way to the Premier League or if the team will crumble under the pressure. Summer signings bring a nearly new roster and an all-new level of intensity, while heavy competition and rising costs, combined with limited ticket availability due to the building of the new Kop stand, pose new challenges for the Club. Dedicated staff and supporters celebrate the team’s climb toward the Premiership while bracing against naysayers who cheer for potential relegation. Will Wrexham AFC rise to the challenge and prove they deserve their place among the elite?
With a new coach and a permanent home, Wrexham AFC Women’s Team continues to battle amongst the top teams in the Welsh Adran Premier League and strives to stand out amidst a crowded field of talented women footballers. With new players, continued support from the Club and fans, and building on the groundwork they’ve laid in previous years, the Wrexham Women look to challenge for the top of the League.

Mac and Reynolds continue to star in Wrexham alongside a rotating cast of players, coaching staff, local fans, and celebrity spectators. “A three-season order for a TV series is nearly unheard of and is only possible through the ground-breaking work of our Emmy-winning documentary team and the relentless rise of Wrexham AFC and all those working so hard to make sports history,” they said as part of the press release. “We are forever grateful to our equally fearless and tireless partners at FX for being with us every step of the way. We are so happy we get to keep telling the Wrexham story for years to come.”

The two owners also executive produce Wrexham, along with Josh Drisko, Bryan Rowland, Jeff Luini, Humphrey Ker, Nick Frenkel, George Dewey, and Boardwalk Pictures’ Andrew Fried, Dane Lillegard, Sarina Roma, and Andy Thomas.

Welcome to Wrexham Season 5 is scheduled to debut on Thursday, May 14, 2026, on FX and stream the next day on Hulu. The eight-episode series will follow a weekly release schedule on Thursdays through the beginning of July.
