The Irish Gaelic series Crá (Boglands) took a while to find a home in the U.S. The series debuted in the U.K. and Ireland in mid-2024 as a co-production between BBC Gaeilge and TG4; like the influx of Welsh-language series in recent years, it aired both in Gaelic and English. Though in the end only the Gaelic version crossed the pond to Acorn TV, it seems that was enough to land the series another season, which was officially confirmed in November 2025.

Most would lump Crá into the overall indigenous language revival across the U.K., spearheaded by Cymraeg 2050; Acorn TV certainly does. The series sits alongside shows like Bariau (Inside), Hinterland (Y Gwyll), and Hidden (Craith). But the existence of Crá would have been unthinkable 30 years ago, as Irish Gaelic was the language of rebellion and the IRA. Certainly, bringing over the Gaelic version, not the English one, as is the case here, would have been a non-starter.* As it is, Acorn notably changed the title to Boglands (despite "Crá" directly translating to "Torment"), and labels it under the English name, even though it's in Gaelic with subtitles.

(*I'm not saying this is the reason it took the show a minute to find its way over here, or why it's not on BritBox. I'm just saying that it's why I'm not surprised by either fact.)

That Crá is now officially filming a second season is just another reminder of how far things have come since the Troubles ended in the late 1990s. Perhaps one day soon, it too will be on the march to land 1 million fluent speakers alongside Wales.

Here's the Season 2 synopsis:

Season 1 of Crá concluded with Garda Conall Ó Súilleabháin discovering the truth about what happened to his mother, Sabine, whose body was found mysteriously buried in a bog. In Season 2, the series will pick up with the personal and professional lives of law enforcers operating in a lawless borderland, as Conall, now a trainee detective, must confront his past to secure his future.
The new cast of Crá Season 2: Siobhán O’Kelly, Lochlann Ó Mearáin, Art Parkinson, Aoife Nic Ardghail, and Tony Devlin
