Paul Matthew Thompson's success in the cozy crime space over the last decade has been close to legendary. The man behind the creation of Father Brown, Vera, and Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators, his series are known for their deep fan bases and years-long runs on TV. He's also had a few misses, most notably with Ridley, the "Adrian Dunbar croons Jazz Standards/Solves Crimes" series that limped through two seasons on PBS. Despite Ridley's failure to thrive, Thompson clearly believes there is a space in the market for Singing Detectives, and his current hit concurs. The Good Ship Murder, which streams in the U.S. on BritBox, just landed a fourth season only a few weeks after its Season 3 finale aired in the U.K.

Unlike Ridley, a series filled with grief and angst in between random Sinatra covers, The Good Ship Murder takes a page from Death in Paradise and puts its former-singer-turned-detective aboard a luxury Mediterranean cruise ship, with every episode stopping in a new sunshine-and-beach-filled port of call. Moreover, its leading crooner, Jack Grayling (Shayne Ward), has spent the first three seasons in a will-they-or-won't-they Moonlighting-style romance with the ship's First Officer, Kate Woods (Catherine Tyldesley), with all the rom-com tropes that follow.

However, Season 4 will see a major shift in the series premise, as Woods prepares to disembark from the show. Much like Grantchester, this exit will come in the series premiere, giving the show time to wrap up her character's storylines and give a proper goodbye before leaving Grayling to find a new partner in crime-solving.

Here's the Season 4 synopsis:

Detective Jack Grayling embarks on a brand new voyage packed with intrigue and danger as First Officer Kate Woods returns for a special appearance marking her final chapter on board. Her departure sets the stage for an exciting new era for Jack, as he navigates fresh challenges, new alliances, and unexpected twists. The new series will introduce a wave of guest stars and new characters as the ship sets sail once more, signalling the beginning of a bold new adventure for the much-loved crime drama.

Ward, who rose to fame after winning The X-Factor Season 2 back in the mid-aughts, returns as Grayling, with Tyldesley (Protection) guest-starring as Woods in the show's season premiere. Season 4 will also see the return of Zak Douglas (The Larkins) and Yuna Shin (The Marlow Murder Club), who, along with Ward, are the only remaining cast members from the show's original roster. The rest of the returning supporting cast includes Ross Adams (Bait), Kiza Deen (Young Wallander), and James Barriscale (Hijack).

Series writers Jeff Povey, Joe Ainsworth, Rob Kinsman, and Kat Rose-Martin are expected to return to pen episodes for the series fourth season, with longtime series director Steve Hughes helming episodes and Jonathan Phillips producing. (Hughes has helmed all but one installment over the show's first three seasons.) Series co-creator Mike Benson executive produces with Thompson and Andy Morgan for Clapperboard.

The Good Ship Murder Season 4 will begin filming in mid-2026. Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on BritBox, and Season 3 is expected to debut Stateside before the end of the year.
