Vicky McClure's 'Trigger Point' Continues with Season 4 Commission

The last time we discussed Trigger Point Season 3, it was in the context of star Vicky McClure's potential scheduling conflict with the show that made her famous, Line of Duty. Like many series on the BBC, LoD was never canceled. It just petered out after Season 6 as the main stars — McClure, Adrian Dunbar, and Martin Compston — all went different directions, starring in various projects, as series creator Jed Mercurio debuted multiple follow-up series. The lack of cancellation meant speculation never stopped on a possible Season 7; however, it took until mid-2025 for the first evidence to surface that it might be happening.

The evidence is slightly circumstantial, but aided by the fact that Trigger Point is one of the aforementioned follow-up shows that Mercurio produced. The series is commissioned and airs on ITV in the U.K., which has, for three seasons now, waited until the current one had finished airing in both the U.K. and the U.S. before confirming further seasons. But the announcement that Season 3 had wrapped filming came with a surprise super-early renewal for Season 4. (We don't even have a real Season 3 photo yet!) Moreover, Season 4 will begin filming... now, almost ensuring it will be finished before the show reaches the U.S.

Why does that indicate the return of Line of Duty? First of all, if filming is ready to go back-to-back with Season 3, that means the production has been preparing the show to film early for months, rather than the regular January-June filming block it typically uses. It also means McClure will be done filming by the end of 2025; Line of Duty is rumored to start filming Season 7 in early 2026. As for Compston and Dunbar, the former was starring in Amazon's The Rig, while the latter leads the PBS series Ridley. Neither show has been greenlit for a third season, leaving their 2026 schedules clear in the first half of the year as well.
