‘American Hostage’ Will Sadly Be Trapped on MGM+
Amazon Studios has, to its credit, stuck fast to MGM as an outlaws-and-swords-flavored service. Until now.
One of the lesser-discussed side effects of the streaming era has been the painful dilution of once-proud brands in the race for “content.” Partly driven by Netflix’s “everything store firehose” model, production studios started to assume that they didn’t need shows to fit their audience, because they needed their audience to be everybody. This, in turn, created some genuine moments of cognitive dissonance; for example, The Gold (a show aimed at a liberal PBS viewership) debuting on the right-wing Yellowstone-vibed Paramount+, or the deepfake thriller series The Capture ending up on the reality-show/comedy-oriented Peacock.
Up until now, MGM+ hasn’t had that problem. I have bitterly complained that parent company Amazon Studios keeps trying to make it a standalone service, but it has, to its credit, stuck fast to MGM as an outlaws-and-swords-flavored service.
My bitterness stems from the reality that Amazon could just fold MGM+ into Prime literally at any time and gain a massive audience for shows like Rogue Heroes and Robin Hood. However, it is insistent on trying to make MGM+ happen as a standalone, and worse, in what will hopefully be the last attempt before the inevitable combining of services, it’s picking up shows that do not fit the MGM brand. Exhibit A: American Hostage, which highly resembles the next hit Apple TV’s been looking for. It’s just debuting in completely the wrong place.
(I would like to note this is officially the first time I’ve looked at a show and said: “That’s an Apple TV show.” Good job, Apple! Sorry about it being on MGM+.)
American Hostage is planned as an anthology series, with each season covering a different true crime story. Here’s the synopsis for the show’s first story.
Based on the acclaimed first season of the scripted podcast of the same name, American Hostage is a psychological thriller set in the 1970s that tells the harrowing true story of Fred Heckman, a beloved Indianapolis radio reporter who is thrust into the middle of a life-or-death crisis when hostage-taker Tony Kiritsis demands to be interviewed on his popular radio news program.

Jon Hamm (Good Omens) as Fred Heckman, alongside William Jackson Harper (The Underground Railroad) as Ben Hairston, Mireille Enos (For All Mankind) as Barbara Heckman, Giovanni Ribisi (Selma) as Tony Kiritsis, Kristoffer Polaha (Mad Men) as Dick Hall, Jonathan Tucker (Westworld) as FBI Special Agent Cormac McNally, and Kat Cunning (Line of Fire) as Ibby Hall.
The series was co-created by Shawn Ryan & Eileen Myers (the duo behind The Night Agent). They penned all episodes along with Abby St. Clair. Directors Adam Arkin (Succession) and Nina Lopez Corrado (The Nevers) split helming duties across the first season’s eight episodes. Ryan, Myers, Arkin, and Corrado executive produced, alongside Hamm, Sharon Hoffman, Connie Tavel, Marney Hochman, Shawn Christensen, Gabriel Mason, and Jen Roskind.
American Hostage is set for a World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival; the eight-episode series will then follow on MGM+, premiering Sunday, September 20, 2026, with two episodes followed by one a week through the beginning of November.
