‘Crá’ Season 2’s First Look Takes Us to Letterkenny
The new season follows Garda Conall Ó Súilleabháin as he is promoted to detective trainee in Letterkenny.
It’s been more than a century since the 1916 Easter Uprising first kicked off what the U.K. called “The Irish Troubles,” and close to 30 years since the historic 1997 Good Friday Agreement, when the Irish people democratically voted to end it. But the long-term effects still linger, cropping up in places people don’t usually consider. For example, since the turn of the 21st century, there’s been an indigenous language revival across the U.K., spearheaded by Cymraeg 2050; the result has been a sharp increase in TV series produced and written by Welsh artists, and an entire movement to create series in both Welsh and English to help encourage bilingualism.
However, projects featuring Irish Gaelic have been few and far between. The lack of a cohesive movement to reclaim Ireland’s native tongue stems from Gaelic having been co-opted by the Irish Republican Army, and generations of it being treated as the language of terrorists. That’s also why it was a big deal when the BBC greenlit the Gaelic-language series Crá, and even more so when it commissioned a second season.
(The series has been retitled Boglands for the U.S. market, despite the word “crá” directly translating to “torment.”)
The new season follows Garda Conall Ó Súilleabháin (Dónall Ó Héalaí) as he is promoted to detective trainee in Letterkenny, under the tutelage of Detective Aoife Cooney (Siobhán O’Kelly).

Here’s the updated synopsis for Season 2:
Conall, now a trainee detective, has moved to Letterkenny and, under the mentorship of Detective Aoife Cooney, faces new cases, loyalties and conflicts. Meanwhile, a murder investigation brings Conall and Aoife back to Carraignanaul, the hometown he is trying to escape. Conall reconnects with old friend Sergeant Barry Roche, but remains tormented by one question: what really happened to his father, Art?
