The BBC and CBC Are 'Committed' with New RomCom
The BBC and the CBC are teaming up for a romcom that sounds pretty 'Committed.'
The Canadian-Irish co-productions are heating up. SisterS just premiered Season 2 this week over on Acorn TV, and now comes a second transatlantic comedy series. A joint production between BBC Northern Ireland and the CBC, Committed is a romantic comedy about the crazy things people do when they fall in love, as well as the crazy things they put up with from the person they love’s nearest and dearest.
What happens when you fall in love with someone who is only in your country on vacation? In Committed, a nice Canadian boy fresh out of a divorce meets the woman he decides is the love of his life. After she heads back home, he does something that sounds like a great idea in theory (and tends to work in the movies): He flies across the ocean with no warning, without so much as a by-your-leave, and transports himself to the middle-of-nowhere Ireland to show up at her front door and declare his eternal, undying devotion.
Great! She’s super pleased! But also... how long is he here exactly? What are his plans? As Sally Catto of the CBC says in the press release: “Committed offers a classic fish-out-of-water comedy intertwined with a unique love story that follows the all too human aftermath of a grand romantic gesture, rather than the build-up to it.”

Here’s the series current synopsis:
The series follows Canadian Peter Hooley, a recently divorced accountant, who falls head over heels for Northern Ireland woman Julie Johnston after a whirlwind weekend in Toronto, and crosses the Atlantic to declare his love, only to discover he's landed in an old-fashioned and eccentric rural Northern Ireland village that's nothing like he imagined.
Committed is a romantic comedy about what happens in a relationship after the grand gesture, when real life barges in. At its core, the series explores what it means to step outside your comfort zone—and how people who are very different from you can make life far more interesting than you planned.

Diona Doherty (Derry Girls) and Dustin Milligan (Schitt’s Creek) star as the main couple, Irish lass Julie and Good Canadian Boy Peter. They will be joined by a rollicking ensemble that includes Irish actors Ian McElhinney (Game of Thrones), Dan Gordon (Bloodlands), Muki Zubis (This is Going to Hurt), Seamus O’Hara (Say Nothing), Patrick Buchanan (Blue Lights), and Chris McCurry (Obituary), plus Canadian actors Athena Karkanis (Murdoch Mysteries), and Georgie Murphy (GEN V).
The series was co-created by Keith Martin, Gerry Dee, and Tim Loane, the latter of whom will act as showrunner. Writers include Loane, Jessie Gabe, and Shebli Zarghami; directors Molly McGlynn and Peter Huang split helming duties across the series’ 10 half-hour installments. Kurt Smeaton acts as supervising producer with Linsey Stewart as consulting producer. Martin, Dee, Loane, Gabe, and McGlynn all executive produce alongside Amy Cameron, Tassie Cameron, and Alex Patrick for Cameron Pictures.
Committed is currently filming in County Down, Northern Ireland, with additional scenes shooting in Hamilton, Ontario. The series is slated to premiere on CBC and BBC Northern Ireland in early 2027. The series does not yet have an American distributor, but if this doesn’t land on Acorn TV, I’ll eat my hat.
