BritBox is upping its mystery thriller game again, co-producing the new adaptation of Dalziel & Pascoe from ITV. Based on the nearly two dozen mystery novels written by the late Reginald Hill, the series was originally adapted for TV by the BBC in the mid-1990s, starring Warren Clarke (Poldark) as DSup Andy Dalziel and Colin Buchanan (The Last Witness) as DI Peter Pascoe, and ran until 2007.

The original series never officially ran on the PBS national schedule; however, it aired locally on various PBS stations in the mid-aughts, following Clarke's final on-screen performance in Poldark's first season. The series stuck around on local stations long enough to be an early offering on various PBS Passports before the rights moved wholesale to BritBox a few years ago.

The new adaptation comes at an interesting time for BritBox, and not just because the 2020s are rife with British remakes, reboots, and reimaginings of series from the late 20th century. Hill was also inducted into the real-life Detection Club, which BritBox is in the middle of turning into a (fictionalized) show about mystery writers solving real crimes that go on to inspire their books. This addition to the lineup adds yet another series with connections to the new show, alongside BritBox's ever-expanding Agatha Christie offerings and G.K. Chesterton's hit Father Brown (and Sister Boniface spinoff) series.

(Detection Club founder Dorothy L. Sayers' works start entering the public domain in 2027. I am *waiting* for my Lord Peter Wimsey reboot.)

Here's the Dalziel & Pascoe remake's current synopsis:

A fresh and contemporary reimagining of the beloved British detective series, based on the books by Reginald Hill, the series centres on the relationship between seasoned Detective Inspector Andrea Dalziel and the newly qualified, by-the-book perfectionist Detective Sergeant Paige Pascoe. Despite their clashing methods, Dalziel and Pascoe work together to form a formidable partnership that is underscored by humour, heart, and humanity.

Kerry Godliman (Whitstable Pearl) stars as DI Andrea Dalziel, with Nina Singh (Art Detectives) as DS Paige Pascoe. The rest of the series cast has not been revealed, but is expected to be announced in due course. It is not clear whether the series plans to do "mystery of the week" with each novel reduced to an hour of TV, as the 1990s-era series was, or if each story will be spread out over multiple episodes. Either way, this will probably be a show with only a few supporting characters beyond Godliman and Singh, relying more on guest stars who pass through with each case.

Colette Kane (Dept.Q) is the lead writer on the six-episode series, with director Isher Sahota (Missing You) helming all installments and Juliet Charlesworth producing. Kane also executive produces, alongside Jonathan Fisher, Ellie Birnie & Ingrid Goodwin for West Road Pictures.

Dalziel & Pascoe is currently filming in Yorkshire. Season 1 is expected to debut on ITV and BritBox as part of the 2026-2027 television season. All 22 of Hill's novels are available wherever you buy your books.
