‘Ludwig’ Season 2 Debuts Early for BritBox Premier Subscribers
BritBox has debuted another would-be hit series early for Premier subscribers without any warning, as 'Ludwig' Season 2 arrives.
For the second time in two months, BritBox has debuted a would-be hit series early for BritBox Premier subscribers without any warning, as Ludwig Season 2 arrives as a binge on October 1.
It was almost dead certain the new season of Ludwig would arrive early to encourage BritBox Premier signups. The series was the leading title driving signups in 2025, and it held the record as the biggest series BritBox ever launched right up until The Other Bennet Sister arrived in May 2026. Moreover, Season 2 has already broken records over on BBC One, with 9.1 million viewers tuning in for the premiere.
To put that in perspective, the U.K. has a population of 70 million, which means almost one in seven viewers across the country tuned in for Ludwig’s second-season debut. Meanwhile, the most-watched primetime scripted series on a broadcast network in the U.S. so far in 2026 is Chicago Med... with 2.8 million, out of a population of 343 million. That’s not even 1%.
As a reminder to our readers, BritBox Premier is not required to watch Ludwig Season 2 – regular subscribers will be able to watch the series when it starts its weekly run on Thursday, October 13. We find that it is best to think of Premier as being to regular BritBox as PBS Passport is to the PBS app, not a separate tier in the way most mainstream services divide their offerings. It is merely an add-on to regular BritBox, the same way PBS Passport is an added “member benefit” to the PBS app that local stations offer to those who support them.
In BritBox’s case, it’s a way to incentivize its surprisingly stable subscriber base to commit to a full year’s subscription, as Premier is only offered as a yearly subscription, without depriving those who can’t afford it, or who need to keep BritBox as part of their burn-and-churn streaming services. Also, most outlets recapping it (including us) plan to follow the regular weekly BritBox schedule. So there's no need to watch early... unless you just really want to.
Here’s the Season 2 synopsis:
Picking up from the end of Season 1, master puzzle-setter John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor is now a Crime Scene Consultant, working alongside DCI Russell Carter, on impossible crimes for the Cambridge Police Authority. No longer having to masquerade as his brother, he’s openly more ‘Ludwig’ than ever - brilliant at solving puzzles but hopeless at everything else. But John’s identical twin brother, James, is still missing, and now that he’s an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.
Of course, John won’t stop, and neither will Lucy, John’s sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James - a puzzle needs solving, and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun.
David Mitchell (Mitchell & Webb Are Not Helping) stars as Ludwig (and his twin brother, James), with Anna Maxwell Martin (Line of Duty) as Lucy Betts-Taylor, John’s sister-in-law, and Dylan Hughes (Death By Lightning) as her son, Henry Betts-Taylor. The ensemble also includes Dorothy Atkinson (The Gold) as DCS Carol Shaw, Dipo Ola (We Hunt Together) as DI Russell Carter, Ralph Ineson (The Jetty) as Chief Constable Ziegler, and Karl Pilkington (Rain Dogs) as DI Matt Neville.
Season 2 will introduce new series regulars Ben Ashenden (Hijack) as DC Ethan Cole, and Rumi Sutton (After the Flood) as DC Caitlin Sullivan. Other new Season 2 additions include Mark Bonnar (Dept Q) as newspaper editor Gareth Fisher, Sian Clifford (Fleabag) as local MP Joanne Kemper, and Stephen Merchant (The Outlaws) as snooker champion Danny Sloane.
Mark Brotherhood (The Trouble with Maggie Cole) returns to pen another six episodes. Directors George Kane (The Completely Made Up Adventures of Dick Turpin) and Stella Corradi (Killing Eve) split helming duties across Season 2’s six installments; the producer is Georgie Fallon.
Brotherhood and Mitchell executive produce with Kenton Allen & Toby Welch for Big Talk Studios; Claus Wunn & Frank Seyberth for ZDF; and Kathryn O’Connor, Chris Sussman, Robert Schildhouse & Stephen Nye for BritBox.
Ludwig Season 2 is officially streaming with all episodes for BritBox Premier subscribers starting Thursday, October 1, 2026. The series will follow on the regular BritBox tier as a weekly release starting Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
Season 1 is available to stream for all BritBox subscribers. Season 3 is already in production.
