‘Monarch of the Glen’ Casts ‘World on Fire’ & ‘Grantchester’ Stars
The cast for Masterpiece's genderswapped take on the iconic classic is here and full of familiar faces.
Masterpiece and U.K. network 5 have officially announced the cast for their forthcoming new take on Monarch of the Glen, which will put a very modern spin on a series long considered a British classic.
The beloved original ran for seven seasons from 2000 to 2005, and followed the story of Archie Macdonald (Alastair Mackenzie), a young restaurateur who suddenly becomes Laird of Glenbogle when he inherits his family’s ancestral home. This reboot will put an intriguing new spin on the classic saga by recentering its story around a female lead.
Julie Brown (World on Fire) stars as London lawyer Isla Campbell, who returns to her family’s crumbling Scottish estate for her estranged father’s funeral, only to discover that she has inherited a million-pound debt, a bank eager to get the money they’re owed, and a brother, Alasdair (Bridgerton's Chris Fulton), who refuses to let the place go. Now forced to live under the same roof for the first time in years, the siblings must find a way to save the estate before they lose it for good.

Here’s the series synopsis.
When high-flying London lawyer Isla Campbell finds herself back at her family's crumbling Highland estate for her estranged father's funeral, she expects to be gone in days. Instead, she discovers she has inherited a million-pound debt, a bank closing in, and a brother who refuses to let go of their ancestral home. Under the same roof for the first time in years, brother and sister will have to find a way to save the struggling estate before time runs out and they lose it for good.

Alongside Brown and Fulton, the series will also star Ewan Miller (The Gray House) as gamekeeper and family friend Ewan, Rishi Nair (Grantchester) as businessman Daniel, Phyllis Logan (A Taste for Murder) as Morag, John Gordon Sinclair (Granite Harbour) as longtime family lawyer Fergus, and Gordon Kennedy (Mrs. Sidhu Investigates) as stockman Angus.
The series is created and written by Jeremy Brock (A Very Royal Scandal), with Stephen Greenhorn (Dept. Q) joining as a writer for episode 4, and Meriel Sheibani-Clare (The Crown) as writer for episode 5. Tom Vaughan (Doctor Foster) directs. Both Brock and Vaughan are also executive producers, alongside Rob Darnell and Adam Duncan for Ecosse Films, and Susanne Simpson for Masterpiece. Producers include Alex Boyd (How to Get to Heaven from Belfast), Robert Bernstein and Douglas Rae (The Great Escaper).
Production on Monarch of the Glen is currently taking place in Scotland and Northern Ireland. It is expected to air on Masterpiece and 5 in 2027.
