Welsh Crime Drama 'Mudtown' to Make U.S. Debut on BritBox
Welsh drama 'Mudtown' (Ar y Ffin) is heading to BritBox in March 2026.
Welsh dramas and noir-ish mysteries are a fast-growing subset of British TV, both in terms of popularity and sheer volume. Recent series like Rough Cut (Dal y Mellt), The One That Got Away (Cleddau), and Hidden have all successfully crossed the pond to America thanks to streamers constantly on the hunt for new content, and more are on the way with ever-increasing regularity.
The latest to join their ranks is Mudtown, a crime drama starring The Crown's Erin Richards that originally aired on UKTV's Alibi last year. Like many of its onscreen cousins, Mudtown is the English remake of a series (Ar y Ffin) that was originally shot in Welsh. Yes, that essentially means making the whole show twice — the English and Welsh versions were filmed back-to-back — but these sorts of dramas are playing key roles in helping bring Welsh culture — and specifically the Welsh language —back into the mainstream.
Set in Newport's Magistrates Court, where trained volunteers from the local community — yes, these roles are unpaid! – with limited sentencing powers who deal with summary and either-way crimes, Mudtown follows the story of Claire, an experienced magistrate whose personal and professional lives collide when a childhood friend of her daughter's faces arson charges.

Magistrate Claire Lewis Jones faces dilemmas as her daughter's friend faces charges and a criminal kingpin from her past resurfaces, entangling her family in a web of deceit that blurs the lines between justice and personal loyalties.
Alongside Richards, Mudtown also stars Tom Cullen (The Gold), Matthew Gravelle (Steeltown Murders), Kimberley Nixon (Under Salt Marsh), Lauren Morais (The Crow Girl), and Lloyd Meredith (The Red King).
Written by Hannah Daniel and Georgia Lee, the six-part series is a co-commission between UKTV, the Welsh language free-to-air channel S4C, and All3Media International. Rhys Carter (Yr Amgueddfa) and Chris Forste (Hidden) split directing duties. The executive producer for Severn Screen is Ed Talfan, and the series is produced by Hannah Thomas (Hidden).
Mudtown will premiere on BritBox on Thursday, March 12, with two episodes, followed by weekly installments through the finale on Thursday, April 9, 2026.
