Netflix Greenlights Untitled Lady Violet ‘Bridgerton’ Story
We will mentally refer to the new “Untitled Bridgerton Project” as 'Lady Violet: A Bridgerton Story' until Netflix realizes it might as well just call it that.
Even though it’s been over three years since Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story debuted with no follow-up, fans have long believed the series creator, Shonda Rhimes, would eventually create more spinoff limited series from her Bridgerton global smash hit. The main series may not be as culturally dominant as it was in its earliest years, but it’s still a major subscription driver every time a new season drops. Moreover, Queen Charlotte, as a standalone prequel, was a massive hit in its own right.
With at least two more older female characters to center prequels around (not to mention author Julia Quinn’s extended Regency Universe, where Lady Danbury is the connecting thread between the different love stories), more spinoffs had to turn up eventually. It may have taken until October 2026, but Netflix has finally admitted fans were right, confirming a brand-new “Untitled Bridgerton Project,” which we will mentally refer to as Lady Violet: A Bridgerton Story until the streaming service realizes it might as well just call it that.
Of the trio of older titled ladies in Bridgerton – Queen Charlotte, Lady Danbury, and Lady Violet – the latter has been the most obviously set up for a prequel over the last two seasons. After filling in the death of her husband, Edmund Bridgerton, 8th Viscount Bridgerton (Rupert Evans), in Season 2, the widowed matriarch of the Bridgerton clan has her own romance subplot starting in Season 3, one that did not exist in the books. Just as importantly, the Queen Charlotte prequel gave viewers a look at her younger self (Connie Jenkins-Greig) pre-Edmund, handing viewers all the ingredients they would need to enjoy a Violet prequel.
The extremely brief press release announcing the new series only gives us this for a synopsis:
Similar to the massive global hit Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, the series will chronicle the early life of a young Lady Violet and tell the story of her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton.
You can understand why we are already calling it Lady Violet: A Bridgerton Story in our minds.
No cast has been confirmed for the prequel. However, one assumes that if it’s told in flashback form like the first spinoff, Ruth Gemmell will reprise her role as older Lady Violet, with Adjoa Andoh as Lady Agatha Danbury, Golda Rosheuvel as Queen Charlotte, and Hugh Sachs appearing as the current iteration of Queen Charlotte’s right-hand man, Brimsley.
With those assumptions in place, if it’s set within the same timeframe as Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, Netflix will almost certainly endeavor to bring back the majority of the cast from the first spinoff, including Jenkins-Greig (Mr. Selfridge) as Young Violet, Arsema Thomas as young Lady Danbury, India Amarteifio as young Queen Charlotte, Corey Mylchreest as young George III, and Sam Clemmett as young Brimsley. We would also expect Keir Charles (Flesh & Blood) and Katie Brayben (Miss Scarlet and The Duke) to return as Violet’s parents, Lord and Lady Ledger, and Cyril Nri (Cucumber) as Lord Danbury.
As with Queen Charlotte, Rhimes serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, with new addition Nicholas Nardini. Director Tom Verica is confirmed to return to helm all episodes. Bridgerton EP Betsy Beers also executive produces the limited-series spinoff along with Rhimes, Nardini, and Verica.
Bridgerton Season 5 is now in production and will probably debut in late 2027 at the earliest, but more likely early 2028, and probably in multiple parts again.
