Netflix has announced its first original series commissioned in New Zealand, reflecting the streamer’s steadily increasing international production footprint. Production is underway for Queenstown, a drama set among the luxury ski scene of the South Island resort town that gives the series its name. Specifics about the buzzy series are scarce, but it will follow a privileged, wealthy family and those who work for them as their lives collide against the stunning backdrop of the Remarkables mountain range and its black diamond slopes.
Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat) and Frances O’Connor (The Missing) are set to lead the cast, joined by Te Kohe Tuhaka (Chief of War) and Alycia Debnam-Carey (Apple Cider Vinegar). There’s no word yet on who any of these folks are actually playing or how their character will relate to one another, but it’s hard to argue with the cast’s overall quality.
“Queenstown draws an exceptional team of talent and creatives, surrounded by this breathtaking environment,” Netflix Australia and New Zealand Content Director Amanda Duthie said. “Shooting our first locally commissioned series here in New Zealand is a huge moment for us. This is a bold, propulsive story of power, class and family set against the opulent world of a luxury ski town, and we can’t wait for our members to fall in love with this series the way we have.”

Beneath the glamour of Queenstown’s luxury ski scene, a privileged family and the people who work for them collide over power, loyalty, and desire.
The eight-episode drama is created and written by Chloe Stearns (Wolf Like Me). Glendyn Ivin (The Cry) is lead director, with Roseanne Liang (Murderbot) also helming episodes.
Stearns and Ivins also executive produce, alongside Jeremy Platt, Erika North, Jodi Matterson of Silent Firework, and Libbie Doherty of Runaway Unicorn. Co-executive producers include Mel Turner, Ricci Swart, Andrew Low, John Hamm, and John Wynn. Axel Paton co-produces.

Production on Queenstown is underway in Queenstown, New Zealand. The series does not yet have a release date.
