‘The Empress’ Final Season Sets Netflix Premiere in November
The reign of Elisabeth I of Austria will officially come to an end this Fall.
Netflix has set a mid-November premiere date for the third and final season of popular German-language period drama The Empress. Equal parts romance and tragedy, the sumptuous production dramatizes the story of Empress Elisabeth I of Austria, the daughter of a Bavarian duke who married an emperor for love. She also suffered horrific personal losses, struggled with depression, and resented the rigid rules of the Habsburg court she was expected to follow. Still, she was immensely popular and beloved by her people, and her story is no less moving because of its tragic end.
The series’ second season concluded with the royal marriage under considerable strain. Emperor Franz Joseph (Philip Froissant) takes personal command of the troops on the battlefield in the Lombardy-Venetia conflict, despite the strident objections of both his wife and his mother. His relationship with Elisabeth (Devrim Lingnau) has suffered after their daughter’s death and their struggles to produce a male heir for the throne; all of this has put considerable distance between them. The season ends with Franz departing, and Elisabeth stuck comforting the mother-in-law who’s been nothing but cruel to her, insisting that all they can do is hope for brighter days ahead.
Unfortunately, that hope is probably more futile than any of us might like. The series’ final season will see Franz and Elisabeth’s marriage fracture even further, thanks to his lingering trauma over leading so many young men to their deaths, her inability to reach him emotionally, and a health scare that will cause her to leave Austria and introduce her to a man who will change their relationship forever. Maybe stock up on tissues is what I’m saying.
(And that’s without even knowing whether the show will take us up to her death.)
Here’s the (surprisingly lengthy) Season 3 synopsis.
After the devastating Sardinian War, Emperor Franz returns a traumatized man. The guilt of having lost thousands of young men on the battlefield weighs heavily on him. Elisabeth tries to stand by him — she fights passionately for her marriage while at the same time advocating for what would now be right for the empire — yet in vain. While Franz’s infidelity further shakes the marriage, resistance at court and her own health force Elisabeth to leave Vienna and set off to a distant island to recover.
By chance, the Empress meets the leader of the Hungarian revolution, Count Andrássy, on her journey. Their encounter is immediately marked by strong intellectual and physical attraction. Almost simultaneously, Franz's brother Maximilian sets off on a great adventure with his wife Marie: he is to ascend the imperial throne in far-off Mexico. In the end, Elisabeth must decide: follow her heart unconditionally, or be a sincere empress to her people.

Alongside Lingnau and Froissant, returning cast members for the series’ final season include Melika Foroutan as Franz’s mother, Sophie; Johannes Nussbaum as his brother, Maximilian; Josephine Thiesen as Princess Marie Charlotte of Belgium; and Runa Greiner as Countess Charlotte von Stubenberg. New faces joining the cast are Dejan Bućin as Count Andrássy, Merlin Sandmeyer as Konstantin von Hohenlohe, Marlene Burow as Terese, Nico Holonics as Otto von Bismarck, and Sebastian Blomberg as Emperor Wilhelm I.
Katharina Eyssen once again serves as showrunner and head writer for the show’s final season, sharing creative responsibility with executive producer Robert Eyssen and writing duties with Elena von Saucken. Directors Florian Cossen and Julia Langhof split helming duties. Alongside Robert Eyssen, executive producers include Scarlett Lacey, as well as Jochen Laube and Fabian Maubauch for Sommeraus Serien GmbH.
The Empress Season 3 will premiere Thursday, November 12, 2026, on Netflix. Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming.
