Matthew Macfadyen & Claire Foy to Lead ‘You Are Here’
The two actors will star in the best-selling romance.
Since the end of Outlander, Starz may be seen less as a name that’s synonymous with British programming by the average viewer, but that’s not entirely accurate. Not only has the network launched Outlander: Blood of My Blood, but in the past few months alone, it’s aired British series as diverse as Fightland, Amadeus and The Listeners, picked the buzzy Russell T. Davies series Tip Toe, and signed on as a production partner for the Bella Ramsey-led thriller Maya.
Starz, it would seem, very much knows what we want. Now, the network has climbed aboard the forthcoming adaptation of David Nicholls’ award-winning novel, You Are Here, starring Emmy winners Matthew Macfadyen (Death by Lightning) and Claire Foy (The Crown).
Nicholls is the author of several notable bestsellers that have already been adapted for screens both large and small (One Day, Starter for 10). Named one of Amazon’s Best Books of the Year in 2024, You Are Here follows the story of Michael and Marnie, who are brought together by a mutual friend on a long-distance walk across northern England. As they traverse the beautiful scenery of the Lake District, the pair grow increasingly closer through a combination of witty conversation, weather, mild drunken adventures, and thoughtful meditations on life and middle age.
Here’s the series synopsis.
When a mutual friend throws them together, Marnie and Michael unexpectedly find themselves setting off on an epic walk. Against the odds, they end up on the brink of a relationship that neither was looking for, but which might be exactly the one they both need.
You Are Here is about finding a connection when you least expect it and overcoming the obstacles of midlife. Treading the tricky path from loneliness to love, Marnie and Michael go coast-to-coast across the stunning (and sometimes soaking) English countryside, navigating an undeniable attraction that is as exhilarating as it is terrifying.
Foy and Macfadyen are the only announced cast members so far.
“I’m so delighted to be working on You Are Here with Element, the BBC, Starz and Lenny [Abrahamson], whose work I’ve admired for many years,” Nicholls said in a statement. “Matthew and Claire are both just dream casting, wonderful in comedy and drama, so detailed and thoughtful and sympathetic. The intention with the novel was to write a close-up study of a relationship, but set against this magnificent landscape, and that’s our ambition here too; to make something both intimate and epic, funny and dramatic, a romantic comedy with real emotion. We can’t wait to bring Marnie and Michael’s journey to the screen.”
The series is written by Nicholas and directed by Lenny Abrahamson (Normal People). Both also serve as executive producers alongside Foy and Macfadyen, with Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, and Emma Norton for Element Pictures, and Jonny Richards and Anna Ferguson for the BBC. Clare Shepherd is producer.
You Are Here will be filmed in the Lake District and around Manchester later in 2026. It does not yet have a release date on either side of the pond.
