‘The Gold’ Season 2 Goes Island Hopping
"You can tell if a man’s done time by how he treats tobacco"
Episode 2 of The Gold’s second season opens in a new location: the British Virgin Islands, on Tortola. Like Palmer’s place in Tenerife, Spain last week, we’re at an event at a high-class resort that is almost certainly some kind of money-laundering business. At least that’s what we assume, since the venue’s owner, Logan Campbell (Tom Hughes), leaves the event to receive a massive cash drop parachuted in by helicopter to the strains of Aztec Camera’s “Somewhere in My Heart.”
(Even today, Tortola still ranks first as the world’s biggest enabler of global corporate tax abuse.)
Campbell is a new face to the series, and for good reason: he’s only just joining the second half of the gold heist, already underway, invited in by Douglas Baxter, who desperately needs to offload all this cash in his filing cabinet. Campbell isn’t exactly thrilled to hear from Dougie; he already runs his own offshore criminal enterprise, cleaning cash for U.S. drug kingpins based in Florida. The DEA has already sent Agent Gabriella Lunez (Madalena Alberto) to track them; he doesn’t need another headache run by a proven incompetent, not when he’s got the island’s governor, Lauretta (Lorna Brown), in his pocket and is sleeping with her assistant, Kadene (Rochelle Neil). He hangs up on Baxter, determined not to get involved.
