‘The Marlow Murder Club’ Has “An Appetite for Murder”
One would be forgiven for double-checking they didn’t put on Netflix’s docuseries Chef’s Table, as the opening to this week’s The Marlow Murder Club looks more like the credits to a fine-dining series than the start of Season 3’s final mystery. The head chef, Ferdy Blake (Alastair Mackenzie), is clearly modeled on famed British celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, including screaming fits at the staff and best-selling cookery books launched at star-studded galas.
Our trio has been invited as part of Marlow’s VIP crowd to Blake’s latest launch party. Judith is curious what a high-end book launch is like, while Suzie is ready to chow down on the man of the hour. Becks is just thankful she has an excuse to escape Colin’s mum, Marian (Cherie Lunghi), who has invited herself down for a few days after her husband’s passing – passing on her for a new girlfriend, that is. (Colin continues to be an ace husband by refusing to let her walk all over Becks, but it still sucks.)
Suzie sadly will have to lust after a new celebrity, as by the time Ferdy’s fog-laden entrance cue happens, the titular chef is dead, stabbed through the heart in the wash area with his own precious blue steel knife, a £50 note attached. The porter, Cal Merson (Robert Lonsdale), was on dish duty, but deaf to everything because of his noise-canceling headphones. It isn’t until sous chef Isla De Souza (Susan Lynch) comes in and screams upon seeing the body that he realizes his boss is dead on the floor ten feet behind him.
