“The Satan Pit” to Vworp Into Theaters for ‘Doctor Who’ Day
To celebrate Doctor Who Day, an all-timer of a two-parter is headed to a theater near you.
Doctor Who’s immediate future is deeply uncertain, with the flagship series unlikely to return to our screens before 2028 or 2029. (If we’re lucky.) On the plus side, the BBC has officially opened the tender process, allowing producers to pitch their vision for a refreshed take on the franchise. (Progress!) But it is a bit depressing to be staring down the barrel of the show’s 63rd anniversary, known as “Doctor Who Day,” with no new episodes airing or in development.
So it probably shouldn’t surprise anyone that the franchise is doing what it always does when it’s in need: apply copious amounts of David Tennant. Without a new season (or showrunner) to unleash yet another new version of his Doctor, the production is looking back to one of the best stories from its past. To celebrate Doctor Who Day on November 23, Doctor Who: The Satan Pit Extended Cut will be headed to theaters for one night only.
Technically, this is a newly re-edited, cinematic cut of the two-parter “The Impossible Planet” and “The Satan Pit” from the rebooted Season 2 (or Season 28, if you must). One of the best stories of the modern Who era, these episodes blend horror with some of the franchise’s most thoughtful questioning of faith and belief. (It also introduces the Ood and is essentially a Doctor/Rose shipper’s dream.) The re-release will also feature restored deleted scenes previously only available on DVD and never-before-seen extended footage.
Here’s the episode’s synopsis.
Starring David Tennant as the Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose Tyler, the story sees the TARDIS land on Sanctuary Base 6, a remote outpost on a planet orbiting a black hole. As the base crew uncover something ancient beneath the surface, the Doctor and Rose are pulled into one of their darkest and most unforgettable adventures, facing the terrifying Ood and an evil older than time itself: the Beast.
Alongside Tennant and Piper, the recut two-parter also features guest stars Claire Rushbrook (Rivals), Will Thorp (All Creatures Great & Small) and Danny Webb (The Gold); series returnees Shaun Parkes (Line of Duty) as Zachary Cross Flane, Ronny Jhutti (Unforgotten) as Danny Bartock, Paul Kasey (Being Human) as The Ood, and Classic Who actor Gabriel Woolf as The Beast.

Per the press release, the screening will also feature an exclusive interview with International Emmy and multiple BAFTA award-winning director and producer James Strong, who will reflect on making the episodes.
