‘Tommy & Tuppence’ Adds Timely Twist to Agatha Christie
Flirting and crime solving are apparently very in this Fall.
Anyone who knows anything about Agatha Christie is almost certainly familiar with her most famous creations: Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. Maybe even Superintendent Battle or Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent, who have both featured in relatively successful TV adaptations of late. (Netflix’s Seven Dials is actually great!) But despite what feels like everyone’s best efforts, it’s been a struggle to make a decent take on Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, the adventurous crime-solving married couple who age in real time across multiple decades of Christie’s writing.
(No shade to Jessica Raine or David Walliams, who certainly tried their best back in 2015, but Francesca Annis and James Warwick were better in the 1980s version.)
Happily, it looks like BritBox may have cracked the code at long last with its forthcoming series Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence, which is unlike any adaptation that has come before. Set in present-day London, the six-part drama is the first contemporary adaptation of this Christie story. It stars Josh Dylan (The Buccaneers) and Antonia Thomas (Still Up) as Tommy and Tuppence. The always impeccable Imelda Staunton (The Crown) plays Tommy’s eccentric Aunt Ada, who seems to know a surprising amount about crime-solving.
The trailer leans into the series’ contemporary setting and youthful feel, establishing that this is a take on Christie’s classic that finds our titular sleuths in the early days of their professional relationship, with plenty of baggage in their personal one. They’ll not only have to solve crimes, but also figure out how to work with one another. And if the trailer is anything to go by, there’s going to be plenty of flirting and awkward pauses along the way.
(Sign me up, is what I’m saying.)
Here’s the series’ synopsis.
In the first contemporary English language television adaptation of Agatha Christie’s stories, Tommy and Tuppence are a detective duo for the ages. They fall in love, fall out of it, and tumble back in, all while solving some thrilling, entertaining mysteries along the way.
Alongside Dylan, Thomas, and Staunton, the series also stars Nicholas Richardson (Goodbye Christopher Robin), Charlie Condou (Unforgotten), Callie Cooke (Wedding Season), and Chizzy Akudolu (The Woman in the Wall).
The six-episode series is written by Phoebe Eclair-Powell (The Road Trip), in her first commission for television. Fergus O’Brien (Happy Valley) directs the first four episodes, with Ellie Heydon (Outrageous) helming the final two installments; Stella Merz (Miss Austen) produces.
Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence will premiere on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, on BritBox and will stream one episode a week through the end of October.
