‘Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence’ Sets September Premiere
BritBox's brand new remake of Agatha Christie's 'Partners in Crime' will arrive when the weather cools.
When PBS’s Masterpiece first spun off Mystery! in the 1980s as a companion series, there were three Agatha Christie detective series that acted as flagship shows. There was Miss Marple, which starred the late Joan Hickson as Christie’s handpicked choice to play her sleuth. There was Poirot, which was later renamed Agatha Christie’s Poirot, with David Suchet as the definitive take on the detective. (Accept no substitutions or Kenneth Branaghs. Void where prohibited.)
Then there was Agatha Christie’s Partners in Crime, based on the Tommy and Tuppence short stories, with a longer full-season adaptation of one of their few standalone novels, The Secret Adversary. This version starred Francesca Annis (The Forsytes) and James Warwick (The Seven Dials Mystery) as the titular duo. Unlike Marple and Poirot, this series was not nearly as character-defining. Also, unlike Marple, which was successfully rebooted after Hickson’s passing, it did not fare well when it was brought back in 2015, with Jessica Raine and David Walliams taking over the roles.
That’s why, even though there’s word of a new Poirot series in development and talk of a new Miss Marple, we here at Telly Visions are more excited for the new angle on Tommy & Tuppence. Marple and Poirot have tough acts to follow and work to do to convince new fans to watch, but no one has really ever properly cracked the Partners in Crime dynamic on screen. However, if the new trailer is anything to go by, BritBox may have finally succeeded.
Here’s the new series’ synopsis, which is very generalized since this is a mystery-of-the-week series:
In the first contemporary English language television adaptation of Agatha Christie’s stories, Tommy and Tuppence are a detective duo for the ages. They fall in love, fall out of it, and tumble back in, all while solving some thrilling, entertaining mysteries along the way.
