'Maigret' Officially Renewed at PBS for Season 2
PBS Masterpiece has renewed 'Maigret' for a second season, and filming is already underway.
If there’s one big regret we have here at Telly Visions, it’s that the hiatus came for us before we could recap more than the debut episodes of the 2025 Fall PBS Sunday night lineup. As I noted back in August of 2025, of all the moments for public media to be defunded, this one came with a heavy side of irony. Masterpiece and PBS had just pulled off a miracle, surviving the streaming wars, thanks to an abundance of caution by Paula Kerger at the mothership and some risky choices by Masterpiece CEO Susanne Simpson to make the brand a full-scale producer. Not only that, but the shuttering of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting came during a TV season when PBS Sunday nights had the strongest lineup of debuts in a decade.
One of those strong debuts was the return of classic detective Maigret, updated and reoriented for a modern audience, with Benjamin Wainwright (Belgravia) as author Georges Simenon’s titular detective, Jules Maigret. We sadly only got to cover the premiere before we were shut down, which looked very promising. Thankfully, Masterpiece is bringing it back for another season, giving us a second chance to dig into the series.
Season 1 covered four of Simenon’s novels: 1961’s Maigret & the Lazy Burglar, 1956’s Maigret’s Failure, and a finale that mashed up the early 1932 The Saint-Fiacre Affair with the much later 1969 Maigret & the Killer. Season 2 will take on three more novels: The Hanged Man of Saint-Pholien and The Yellow Dog (both from 1931), and 1952’s Maigret’s Revolver.
(Don’t worry, there are 75 Maigret novels; there’s plenty more for future seasons.)

Here’s the Season 2 synopsis:
This season sees dramatic changes in La Brigade Criminelle. We introduce Maigret's boss and mentor, Director of Police Xavier Guichard, who has become suspicious of Maigret's growing fame and decides to 'take him down a peg.' One of Maigret's colleagues leaves, another is transferred by Guichard, and replaced by a former Internal Affairs officer, George Bonfils, who immediately makes himself unpopular with Maigret's core team. This internal turmoil is the backdrop for daring new adaptations of three of Georges Simenon’s best-known Maigret novels.
As Maigret investigates cruel and heartbreaking crimes, he will find that the line between guilt and innocence can be impossibly blurred. He will have to reach deep into his heart to work out his own unique form of justice, for victims and perpetrators alike.
Wainwright returns for Season 2 alongside Stefanie Martini (The Gold) as Louise Maigret, Shaniqua Okwok (It’s a Sin) as Inspector Janvier, Nathalie Armin (Showtrial) as Prosecutor Mathilde Kernavel, Reda Elazouar (Sex Education), Kerrie Hayes (The Responder), and Rob Kazinsky (Star Trek: Section 31).
Season 2 adds Nathaniel Parker (The Inspector Lynley Mysteries) as Director of Police Xavier Guichard, and Alex Bhat (Marie Antoinette) as George Bonfils.

Patrick Harbinson (The Tower) returns to serve as lead writer and showrunner. Director David Evans (Domina) will once again split helming duties, this time with Lisa Clarke (Sanditon), and Gina Cronk producing. Harbinson also serves as executive producer alongside Simpson for Masterpiece.
Maigret Season 2 is currently filming in Europe. All episodes of Season 1 are available to stream via PBS Passport and the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel.
