A Woman of Substance hasn’t premiered yet on BritBox, but Channel 4 is already out with the Season 2 renewal. Brenda Blethyn (Vera) and Jessica Reynolds (Kneecap) are both officially set to return for a second series of the adaptation of Barbara Taylor Bradford’s novels, starring as the iconic character of Emma Harte, a housemaid-turned-mogul, daughter, mother, lover, fighter, and a 20th-century feminist icon who refused to know her place.

The renewal of A Woman of Substance, arriving before Season 1 premieres in the U.S., is also a good sign of just how successful it’s been for Channel 4. The original 1980s adaptation was the network’s first major hit, one that put it in the conversation alongside the BBC and ITV. The 2026 remake isn’t Channel 4’s most-watched series of all time, but it is the network’s most-watched drama in five years, with ratings averaging around ~3 million viewers per episode.

“We couldn’t be more delighted to be back with our beloved Emma Harte,” said writers Katherine Jakeways and Roanne Bardsley in the press release. “The higher she climbs, the greater the risks, and we’re looking forward to more of everything we adore - heart-soaring romance, gut-wrenching loss, and of course, delicious revenge.”

Since the series hasn’t aired in America, we’ll leave out the big spoiler at the end of Season 1, but here is the rest of the Season 2 synopsis:

In this new series, we rejoin the unstoppable Emma Harte as she emerges from World War I and strides into the glittering, fast changing world of the 1920s. Emma’s ambition for the Harte name is unrelenting, as is her determination to make the Fairley family pay. But she has passion to contend with, in the form of the infuriatingly charismatic Paul McGill, and she’ll also endure devastating loss and face unexpected betrayals from those she holds most dear. Meanwhile, in the 1970s, Emma battles to win back her life’s work from Jim Fairley. It’s one thing to reach the top, and another to stay there…..

Outside of Blethyn and Reyonds, the rest of the Season 2 cast has not been confirmed, but considering how spoilery a cast list would be, for once, I’m not complaining. The current cast of Season 1 includes  Jo Joyner (Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators), Emmett J. Scanlan (How to Get to Heaven From Belfast), and Lydia Leonard (Wolf Hall), Will Mellor (Mr Bates vs The Post Office), Lenny Rush (Am I Being Unreasonable?), Leanne Best (This City is Ours), Ewan Horrocks (Domina), Harry Cadby (In Flight), and Toby Regbo (Belgravia).

Series creator Jakeways (The Buccaneers) will return to write Season 2 alongside Bardsley (Screw). Filming is set to commence in Yorkshire later this year. Directors are expected to be announced in due course. Executive producers are Jakeways, Beth WillisJoe InnesGeorge Faber, and The Barbara Taylor Bradford Trust.

A Woman of Substance will premiere on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, on BritBox with two episodes, followed by weekly releases through the beginning of August.
