‘Babylon Berlin’ Season 5 Sets 2027 U.S. Premiere
'Babylon Berlin' is officially trolling its American fans with the release date of the series’ final season.
Babylon Berlin is officially trolling us. The German-language series, which became a cult hit in the U.S. when it arrived on Netflix during the 2020 pandemic lockdowns, has announced the release window for the final season.
Based on The Gereon Rath Mysteries by Volker Kutscher, the series has become the defining parable of how fascism rises in a sleeping democracy. (We all knew the best TV series about our current situation in the U.S. could only come from abroad.) Perhaps unsurprisingly, even a foreign show warning the world about the current crisis in the U.S. struggled to reach the finish line. After the first three seasons became an algorithmic hit on Netflix, Season 4 suddenly struggled to get made, only finally arriving in 2024, long after Netflix had quietly dropped it.
Germany’s public broadcaster ARD was then left high and dry by co-producer Sky TV, which the American megacorp Comcast had bought out during production of Season 4. (One of the many reasons it wound up delayed.) A veritable consortium of backers financed the series’ final eight episodes, and Season 5 was announced in 2025, with MHz Choice picking up the full series.
The final season will cover Kutscher’s fifth and final novel, Märzgefallene, set over five short weeks in February 1933, from when Hitler became Chancellor to the collapse of German democracy. At home, the series is getting the prime “top of the new TV season” debut in September, as befits one of the country’s biggest TV series to date. However, in the U.S., MHz Choice has announced it will stream the series... over five weeks in February 2027.
Here’s the Season 5 proper synopsis:
Inspired by motifs from Kutscher’s novel Märzgefallene, the fifth season sets off in January 1933, when Hitler’s appointment as Reich Chancellor opens the darkest chapter in German history. Detective Charlotte Ritter investigates a series of murders targeting former front-line soldiers. The connections and motives reach back to 1918. An explosive file has disappeared, one that casts Hitler’s time as a soldier in the First World War in a new light. Politically incendiary material – and those involved seem willing to stop at nothing to get their hands on the file… even murder. When investigator Gereon Rath suddenly vanishes without a trace, Charlotte does not know whether she will ever see him again.
Volker Bruch (Legacy of Spies) and Liv Lisa Fries (Freud’s Last Session) are confirmed to return to reprise their roles as Gereon Rath and Charlotte Ritter. The rest of the ensemble confirmed to return includes Christian Friedel (The Zone of Interest) as Reinhold Gräf, Hannah Herzsprung (The Bloom of Yesterday) as Helga Rath, Fritzi Haberlandt (Das Boot) as Elisabeth Behnke, Karl Markovics (The Regime) as Samuel Katelbach, Lars Eidinger (All The Light We Cannot See) as Alfred Nyssen, Peter Kurth (SOKO Wismar) as Bruno Wolter, Matthias Brandt (Dark Woods) as August Benda, and Sebastian Urzendowsky (Borgia) as Max Fuchs.
New cast confirmed for Season 5 includes Clemens Schick (Andor), Ulrich Noethen (Vienna Blood), and Devid Striesow (All Quiet on the Western Front).

The director/writer trio of Henk Handlogten, Achim von Borries, and Tom Tykwer will also return for the final season, penning all eight episodes and splitting helming duties. The series will be co-produced by Christoph Pellander and Carolin Haasis from ARD Degeto, Manfred Hattendorf and Monika Denisch from SWR, and Alexander Bickel and Caren Toennissen-Brand from WDR. Stefan Arndt, Uwe Schott, and Michael Polle executive produce for X-Filme alongside Jan Mojto, Dirk Schürhoff, and Moritz Herzogenberg for Beta Film.
Babylon Berlin Season 5 will cross the pond to stream on MHz Choice in February 2027. The final season is scheduled to debut as a binge in Germany on Thursday, September 10, on the ARD app.
The eight-episode series will then air in two parts: the first four episodes on Saturday, September 19, and the final four one week later, on Saturday, September 25, 2026. Seasons 1 through 4 are available to stream.
