‘Cooper & Fry’ Season 1 Earns BritBox Premier Early Release

BritBox introduced “Premier” while we were on hiatus, but the consensus – at least on social media – seems to be that the rollout has been nothing short of a small disaster, with subscribers not understanding the difference between being signed up for regular BritBox versus Premier. Perhaps it’s because no one in the communications department ever worked at a local PBS station, because BritBox Premier is to regular BritBox as PBS Passport is to the PBS app.

BritBox Premier is not a separate tier in the way most mainstream services divide their offerings. It is merely an add-on to regular BritBox, the same way PBS Passport is an added “member benefit” to the PBS app that local stations offer to those who support them. Everything that comes to Premier is an early release benefit – the only difference is all episodes arrive a few weeks ahead of the premiere instead of on premiere day. (Exactly like The Count of Monte Cristo and Patience Season 2 did on PBS Passport in the first half of 2026.)

In BritBox’s case, it’s a way for the company to take advantage of the fact that it is the rare service with an extraordinarily stable user base that stays subscribed year-round. On average, most mainstream streaming services lose 5-9% of subscribers to turnover every month. Since BritBox is on the low end of that scale, the “Premier” tier (which is annual only) is designed to incentivize choosing a full year’s subscription without actually depriving those who don’t.

Unfortunately, the result currently is that regular viewers sit down expecting to be able to binge – because the streaming service doesn’t do a good job of differentiating what’s being released as an early release binge on Premier vs what’s arriving weekly for the regular subscriber – and find themselves confronted partway through with a paywall telling them to pay $150 to watch the rest. Since the service also doesn’t do the best job of telling anyone which shows will get the “Premier Binge” treatment, it will probably not surprise anyone to learn we JUST discovered its latest detective series, Cooper & Fry Season 1, is arriving as an early-release binge on BritBox... next Monday, August 17, 2026.

Here’s BritBox’s version of the series’ synopsis:

Set in and around England’s picturesque Peak District, the series follows DC Ben Cooper, a member of a rural police force in Derbyshire who is struggling to emerge from the shadow of his late father. He’s teamed up with DC Diane Fry, a successful detective from Leeds who transfers under mysterious circumstances. is an outsider fleeing tragedies in her past.

While the two initially butt heads, finding that they have very different approaches to policing, they slowly begin to come to an understanding as they work together on a case surrounding a body unearthed on a local farm. Together, they tackle grisly crimes in the remote countryside.

The reason we’re excited for Cooper & Fry is because of the leads. Robert James-Collier (Downton Abbey) stars as DC Ben Cooper and Mandip Gill (Doctor Who) as DC Diane Fry. Both actors are fan favorites from their respective franchises who have struggled to break out since. James-Collier has openly discussed the struggles facing northern working-class actors (he’s from Manchester, she’s from Leeds), and it is high time the two of them landed roles that elevated them to star status. Reviews of the series’ first season praised their chemistry as the main reason to tune in when it premiered in the U.K., and Season 2 is already filming.

James-Collier and Gill lead a cast that includes Charlotte Bradley (Endeavour) as Ben’s mother, Isobel Cooper, and Lorcan Cranitch (Bloodlands) as their boss DI Paul Hitchens. The rest of the ensemble includes Barry O’Connor (Shetland) as fellow detective DS Todd Eland; Niamh McCann (The Listeners) as station liaison Tracey Garnett; and Clara Simpson (The Reunion) as forensic scientist Dr Juliana Taylor.

Series creators Ben Court and Caroline Ip (Whitechapel) wrote all episodes of Season 1 and return as lead writers for the show’s second season, with directors Ronan Burke (Clean Sweep) and Rob Burke (Harry Wild) splitting helming duties, and Sebastian Cardwell producing. Mike Benson and Jonathan Hall will Executive Produce for Clapperboard along with Tamryn Reinecke of Pale Rebel Productions.

Cooper & Fry Season 1 will premiere as an early release benefit for BritBox Premier subscribers, with all episodes debuting on Monday, August 17, 2026. We expect the series to follow soon after as a weekly release in September or October 2026. Season 2 is expected to debut in 2027.
