Alex Kingston & Iain Glen Join Cast of ‘Danger Money’
Sometimes it seems like the problem with Amazon’s Prime Video is that it refuses to accept who actually watches its programs.
Sometimes it seems like the problem with Amazon’s Prime Video (other than its insistence that people refer to it as such, as if that will make viewers stop calling the service “Amazon”) is that it refuses to accept who actually watches its programs.
Let us, for a moment, consider the breakout hits on the service, starting with it’s first two Emmy breakouts: Fleabag and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Since then, series that have caught attention without a massive marketing effort on Amazon’s part include Young Sherlock, Reacher, The Wilds, Off Campus, The Summer I Turned Pretty, and most recently, Sterling Point. Looking at that list, it’s almost all teen soaps, primarily aimed at women, and filled with hot dudes.
Yet, Amazon seems to believe its primary audience is young, aggressive men. While The Boys was a hit, Amazon poured money into turning it into one, same as Fallout and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. (Though the success of the latter has been, in the end, driven by female viewers.) Young Sherlock, in particular, seems to have convinced the production studio that Guy Ritchie-style shows are the new hotness for them, nice and violent and masculine. (Somehow, they’re completely missing that women are tuning in because Donal Finn is stealing the show out from under everyone while being utterly dreamy about it.)
Hence, the announcement of another Two Brothers-made, male-coded, violent gangster series, Danger Money. Never mind that just about every Two Brothers show that’s premiered on Prime Video in the U.S. has flopped, totally unnoticed by its viewership. Amazon will be a streaming service for boys, by boys. Just ignore that almost all of its success since launching in 2014 comes from women.
Here’s the series synopsis:
Decades after the mission that destroyed his life—and still plagued by guilt and desperate to rebuild a relationship with his daughter—Razor is pulled back into the world he left behind when an old friend resurfaces with a job too good to refuse.
Razor travels to Italy, only for events to spiral. Forced on the run with a motley crew made up of his impulsive ‘nephew’ Jamaal and secretive tag-along Roxy, he is thrust into a violent conspiracy involving hidden war spoils, corrupt institutions, and powerful enemies determined to keep the past buried. As Razor fights to clear his name and protect those closest to him, he must confront the truth behind the mission that destroyed his life. Because the money isn’t the only thing waiting to be uncovered.
Ray Winstone (The Gentlemen) stars as Alan “Razor” Sharp, the former SAS operative haunted by a botched mission in the 1990s that left his reputation in tatters and his best friend dead, with Kara Tointon (Mr. Selfridge) as his daughter Maggie, and Oliver Maltman (Red Eye), as her partner, Gavin. They’re joined by Alex Kingston (Doctor Who) as Roxy, Arian Nik (The Split Up) as Jamaal, Mimi Keene (Sex Education) as Ana, plus Iain Glen (Game of Thrones) and Sean Pertwee (Silent Witness) as Alan’s old friends.
Maltman co-created the series with co-writer David Crow; the two are joined by fellow writers Iain Hollands, Ryan O’Sullivan, and Matilda Wnek in penning episodes. Directors Carl Tibbetts (Truelove) and Charles Martin (The Crow Girl) split helming duties across the six episodes, with Mick Pantaleo producing. Crow, Maltman, and Hollands serve as executive producers alongside Harry & Jack Williams, Sarah Hammond, Alex Mercer & Katie Churchill for Two Brothers.
Danger Money is currently filming in the U.K., with an expected release in 2027. It is currently unclear whether the series will debut on Amazon’s Prime Video in both the U.S. and the U.K. (like Boat Story) or go to a different U.S. distributor (like Kill Jackie).
