'First Day on Earth' to Sport a First Rate Cast
Michaela Coel is coming back with 'First Day on Earth,' and she's got a stacked cast to go with it.
It's been over 18 months since HBO and the BBC announced they were on board to co-produce Michaela Coel's follow-up to her critically acclaimed series, I May Destroy You, in August 2024. At the time, there wasn't much to go on, other than that Coel would be writing and starring in it, and that, for her second project, Jesse Armstrong (Succession) was on board to help produce. It was something of a heavyweight team-up for the networks, as Coel had won the Emmy Award for outstanding writing for a limited series for I May Destroy You, while Succession's final outing had dominated awards season the year before.
However, the project disappeared from the radar for a while, until February of 2026, just as we were shifting over all our archives, and didn't have the bandwidth to write about it. (It's been sitting in the to-do pile ever since.) However, the topline cast is full of heavy hitters, and Coel is clearly ready to swing for the fences once again.
Thankfully, a second wave of casting has been announced as filming gets underway in earnest in April, giving us a second chance to fill you all in on exactly how stacked this show is going to be when it finally arrives.

Here's the series synopsis:
British-Ghanaian novelist Henri is on the run – from herself, her life, her partner, and that weird guy at her book talk. When she ends up in Ghana, her ancestral homeland, she finds herself submerged in an altogether different world. Amidst new friends, fresh joy, and many different and nuanced relationships, Henri also finds secrets, lies, difficulty, and denial - leading her to question everything about herself, her heritage, and her family.

Coel co-stars alongside a banger lineup of Thandiwe Newton (Line of Duty) as Anya, Maxine Peake (Say Nothing) as Helen, Danny Sapani (Harlots) as Ernest, and Ncuti Gatwa (Doctor Who) as Darren. New additions to the cast include Bukky Bakray (Liaison), Rakie Ayola (The Pact), Ray BLK (Champion), Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Mr Loverman), Dan Skinner (Litvinenko), Sam Delich (RFDS), Fisayo Akinade (Heartstopper), Adam Lundgren (The Golden Boy), and small-screen newcomers Daniella Arthur-Kennedy and Jameel Buari.
The cast also features several major Ghanaian actors, including Joselyn Dumas (Flawsome), Adjetey Anang (Things We Do for Love), Akofa Edjeani (I Sing of a Well), Roselyn Ngissah (Adams Apple), Akrobeto (Sam Loko), and Godwin Namboh (Potomanto).

The series also cast several well-known musical recording artists: Ama Serwah Genfi (better known as Amaarae), Michael Owusu Addo (better known as Sarkodie), Deborah Owusu-Bonsu (better known as Sister Deborah), and Lady Jay.
Coel will write and star in the 10-part series, with her I May Destroy You director Sam Miller once again along for the ride, and Johann Knobel producing. Both serve as executive producers alongside Armstrong, Phil Clarke & Roberto Troni for Various Artists Limited, and Jo McClellan for the BBC.
Filming for First Day on Earth is currently underway in Ghana and the U.K. The series is expected to debut in the 2026-2027 television season on both the BBC and HBO.
