‘Ghosts: The Possession of Button House’ First Image Haunts Us
'Ghosts' is coming to haunt theaters this October.
The U.S. version of Ghosts continues at a pace, with a sixth season slated to premiere just before Halloween, on Thursday, October 29, 2026. The series is the rare Americanized remake to turn into a long-running hit, and though it hasn’t quite had the same cultural impact as The Office did in its day, the two still have many similarities, including outlasting their original British inspiration. Sadly, the U.K. version, despite picking up a decent-sized U.S. following, didn’t make it quite as far as its Stateside counterpart, ending with Season 5 in 2023.
However, with the BBC’s current spate of hit TV series making the jump to the big screen, including fellow transatlantic hit Call the Midwife, Ghosts was ripe for the feature film treatment. So while in the U.S., we’ll be readying ourselves for the return of Ghosts Season 6, in the U.K., they’ll be heading to cinemas to see Ghosts: The Possession of Button House.
Much like Downton Abbey, Ghosts could find a second life as a feature film series. Part of the reason the series ended when it did was that the ensemble was growing tired of the rigors of a TV filming schedule. It’s much easier to get people together for four to six weeks to make a feature film than the months-long process of creating episodic TV. Besides, the time off in between means seeing them return gives a little thrill as well.
As for the film’s synopsis, to quote the BBC:

The Ghosts franchise (meaning both the American and British versions) is created by Mathew Baynton (Murder is Easy), Simon Farnaby (Paddington in Peru), Martha Howe-Douglas (Doctor Foster), Jim Howick (Sex Education), Ben Willbond (There She Goes), and Laurence Rickard (Chicken Town). All six return to reprise their ghostly roles from the original series, with Bayton as Thomas Thorne, Farnaby as Julian Fawcett MP, Howe-Douglas as Lady Fanny Button, Howick as Pat Butcher, Willbond as The Captain, and Rickard as Rogh the Caveman.
The feature film also brings back Charlotte Ritchie (Grantchester) and Kiell Smith-Bynoe (Mitchell & Webb Are Not Helping) as the very much alive Alison and Mike Cooper, and Lolly Adefope (Saltburn) as ghost Kitty Higham.
The script was created, written, and improvised by Baynton, Farnaby, Howe-Douglas, Howick, Rickard, and Willbond, who are credited as writers and creators of the franchise. Director Simon Hynd (Can You Keep A Secret), who directed multiple episodes of the original series, helmed the big-screen version, with Alison Carpenter and Andy Brunskill producing. Baynton, Farnaby, Howe-Douglas, Howick, Rickard, and Willbond also serve as executive producers, alongside Jill Forbes for Monumental, Eva Yates for BBC Films, Richard Acton for BBC Studios, and Marie-Claire Benson & Emma Berkofsky for Lionsgate.
Ghosts: The Possession of Button House will premiere in the U.K. and Ireland just in time for Halloween, on Friday, October 23, 2026. Hopefully, by then someone will have picked up distribution for this side of the pond.
