‘Grantchester’ Lays Out Its Final Cards
With only two episodes left after this one, 'Grantchester' blows everything sky-high so it can all be reassembled for the series finale.
Grantchester opens this week with Cathy all aflutter because Mr. Switch is promising that model-of-the-moment Tilly Mayflower* (Evie Rosa Butler) will be wearing a CeCe’s dress. Mrs. C is thankfully a little less willing to assume everything is on the up and up, finding the entire situation – including Cathy needing to bring the dress to Tilly at Cambridge’s swanky new club Sady’s – on the suspicious side.
(It’s not Grantchester’s fault “Tilly Mayflower” instantly made me think of Tilly Norwood, but I also couldn’t get it out of my head.)
Even if we weren’t aware someone would be turning up dead in the next few minutes, everything about Sady’s feels off, from the creepiness of Tilly’s manager Clarke Barron (Tej Obano) to the club staff Malcolm (Matthew Duckett) and Kara (Lola Shalam), who exchange ugly furtive looks when they think no one is looking at them. Thankfully, the series doesn’t take too long in getting Cathy nice and tipsy on champagne before she stumbles across Malcolm in the back room, dead.
Cathy isn’t the only one currently less-than-sober, though thankfully it’s not Geordie who’s also been drinking; it’s Alphy. Our poor lost viar is trying his best to pull a Sidney, getting drunk as a skunk at an illegal poker game in some back room. Geordie’s already unhappy upon realizing Switch has once again gotten his wife drunk when he and Larry show up – when he finds that said back room is in Sady’s (debunking Kara’s claim there’s no one else on the premises) and Alphy uselessly smashed, his disappointment is almost overwhelming.
