‘One of Our Own - A Hope Street Film’ to Stream on BritBox
The first images of the 'Hope Street' movie have us ready to return to Port Devine.
Every time I open up anything on Hope Street to write about it, I am reminded of just how far the series has come from the original soap opera commissioned for BBC Northern Ireland in 2021. Set in the fictional small, insular town of Port Devine, the series originally began as a fish-out-of-water crime-of-the-week show starring Amara Karan as DC Leila Hussain, the town’s first Muslim detective, who moves from London for mysterious reasons.
The soap opera/mysterious backstory aspect of the show took over the first season, making the series more of a twisty puzzlebox show and less a series about cultural clash, a direction aided by Karan’s exit at the end of Season 1. From there, each season centered on a new lead, and the series kept changing direction until the end of Season 3, when it blew up... well, the town.
Since Season 4, Hope Street has stabilized around longtime central supporting characters, Sgt Marlene Pettigrew and the Dunwoodys, as part of a larger ensemble show. But after two seasons of relative calm, the BBC and BritBox decided to commission a feature film, bringing back some of the show’s favorite characters for one last case.
Here’s the movie’s synopsis:
The 90-minute film sees the police back on the beat in the fictional coastal town of Port Devine. The story opens with an assault in broad daylight, and Callum McCarthy (now a Detective Constable) returns to the town to solve the case. As the police investigation starts, Callum is determined to find out what happened, but it brings bad news for Detective Sergeant Marlene Pettigrew, as Callum suspects her love interest might be involved in the attack.
Meanwhile, at The Commodore, Nicole has a new admirer, and love is in the air with a wedding on the horizon for one couple. But in Port Devine, nothing is plain sailing.
The film will star the current cast of Hope Street as of Season 5, including lead Tara Lynne O’Neill (Derry Girls) as Inspector Eve Dunlop, Kerri Quinn (Say Nothing) as Marlene Pettigrew, plus Aaron McCusker (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Niamh McGrady (The Fall) as Clint and Nicole Devine-Dunwoody. Other returnees who joined the series over the four seasons the show has been on the air include Niall Wright (A Woman Of Substance), Marcus Onilude (Ted Lasso), Eleanor Methven (Little Women), Paddy Jenkins (Blue Lights), Cameron Cuffe (Nautilus), Katie Shortt (Casualty), Jonny Grogan (The Head), and no-longer-a-newcomer RhéAna Kamalu. The film will also feature the late Finnian Garbutt (Housejackers) in his final on-screen appearance.
Newcomers to Port Devine for the feature film include Letitia Hector (Succession), Tim McGarry (Give My Head Peace), and comedian Paddy Raff.
Susanne Farrell and Paul Marquess created the series; the latter is the film’s lead writer. Marquess executive produces with Donna Wiffen for Long Story TV and Robert Schildhouse, Stephen Nye, and Jess O’Riordan for BritBox International.
One of Our Own: A Hope Street Film will air on BBC One Northern Ireland and BBC Daytime later this year, following a limited theatrical release in cinemas in Northern Ireland, the wider UK and the Republic of Ireland. It will follow on BritBox in the U.S.

Hope Street Seasons 1 through 4 are available on BritBox and for members on select PBS Passports. (As always, check your local listings.) Season 5 is currently exclusive to BritBox, but is expected to debut on PBS Passport before the end of 2026.
