Last year, when we got the chance to interview Ella Maisy Purvis, the bright and shining star of Patience, about Season 1, she was literally mid-filming, in costume, and talking to Telly Visions from the set of Season 2. After an incredibly strong first season playing the sensitive, bright, autistic girl who goes from working in criminal records to actively helping the police solve murders, the second season finally reaches American shores via PBS.

The first season did a great job of representing Patience’s specific experience being on the spectrum, with the added authenticity of all neurodivergent characters played by neurodiverse actors. Patience continues to highlight both the struggles and benefits of neurodivergence, while not generalizing one person’s perspective to speak for an entire community. The second season maintains this standard and adds conflict on two distinct fronts: Patience’s professional and romantic relationships.

When we chat with Purvis this time, she’s trying to beat the U.K. heat wave by sitting in front of a fan. Climate change notwithstanding, this girl is on fire – a certified star capable of holding her own and keeping the audience invested as the second season begins with the abrupt exit of DI Bea Metcalf, former co-star Laura Fraser. Fraser was the well-known name in Season 1, and it says a lot about Purvis’ popularity and charm that the show picked up a new lead detective (DI Frankie Monroe, played by Jessica Hynes) and moved right along.
