The Pies Have It in ‘The Great British Baking Show’
Just admit it's Pie Week.
I’ve been bullish so far on the new direction The Great British Baking Show has taken since Nigella Lawson joined as a judge. Of course, I love that Nigella has, first and foremost, put a stop to Paul Hollywood running roughshod over the rest of the team and the bakers. Also, I know not everyone is keen on the Technical Challenge shake-ups, but I personally think they’ve freshened things up.
However, not every problem in the tent (or behind the scenes) has been solved. We already had one complete failure in the tent this season. (Kudos to Noel Fielding for calling out Paul for not giving the bakers enough time!)
Then there’s this week’s theme: Pastry Week. The series has had some form of Pastry Week nearly every season since the very first season, with challenges ranging from vol-au-vents to Cornish pasties. However, Pastry Week has been hit or miss over the years, partly because production relies too heavily on pie-based challenges. Say it with me now: Pastry Week does not equal Pie Week.
Unfortunately, production still hasn’t internalized that lesson. Hence this week winding up as Pie Week. Again.
