‘The Other Bennet Sister’ First Proposes, Then Escapes

"You understand the appeal of living boldly, living with freedom, unburdened by the shackles of marriage."

If there was any doubt that last week’s ending was supposed to be a cliffhanger, Episode 7 of The Other Bennet Sister picks up right where the previous episode ended, with Mr. Ryder meeting with Mary in the library, and we all know what that means! A proposal!

But it may not be exactly the sort of proposal Mrs. Bennet or any of her daughters, Mary included, expect.

Outside the library, Mrs. Bennet and her other daughters listen at the door, but apparently they don’t catch the finer details of Ryder’s declaration (or they’re bickering so much they don’t hear it). Ryder is, in fact, pulling a Wickham/Lydia (or a Shelley/Wollstonecraft) on Mary. Promising rapturous days of love, poetry, and wine under the Italian sun, Ryder, pacing and gesticulating, finishing up with the indelible line:

"You understand the appeal of living boldly, living with freedom, unburdened by the shackles of marriage."

(Yikes.)
