The 'This City Is Ours' Soundtrack Is Sublimely Old School
We run down the sublime soundtrack heard over the course of the eight-episode first season of 'This City Is Ours.'
Most series, when they build soundtracks to set the mood for episodes or emphasize scenes, tend to use well-known, well-loved favorites. It’s usually the kind of song that will make a viewer smile without realizing it, and then wonder why it’s stuck in their head for days afterward. Unless the series is basically a musical (Champion) or set in the music industry (Riot Women, We Are Lady Parts), it’s rare for a live singer to show up and perform in the middle of a scene.
But that’s exactly what This City Is Ours does, not once, but twice over the course of the series’ first season. The series, set in Liverpool, prides itself on showcasing the city’s best and brightest, including local lad George Gallagher. Best known for winning the 2015 edition of BBC One’s one-off singing competition, Frank Sinatra: Our Way, the series demonstrates the power, influence, and money of the Phelan Clan by trotting Gallagher out for both christenings and funerals.
While Gallagher has been performing steadily since his win eleven years ago, his multiple appearances in the hit series turned him into an overnight sensation. That’s in part due to the canny use of Gallagher’s performances, mixed in with the original versions (and a few other covers) of classic crooner favorites.
With all episodes now streaming on AMC+, here is the full soundtrack listing for Season 1 of This City is Ours.
