'Trying' Season 5 Will Arrive on Apple TV In July
Too many of Apple TV's shows are still flying under the radar in terms of mainstream awareness. Such is the case with 'Trying'.
Though Apple TV has released some of the buzziest streaming series in recent memory – think Ted Lasso, Severance, Pluribus, and Widow’s Bay — too many of its (generally excellent) series are still flying under the radar in terms of mainstream awareness. Such is the case with Trying, a heartfelt little comedy-that-could which is entering its fifth season this summer. The series stars Rafe Spall (Under Salt Marsh) and Ester Smith (The Reluctant Vampire) as Jason and Nikki, a charmingly adorable couple who, when the series premiered, were trying to conceive a child. After much consideration, the duo decided to adopt, and the show followed their journey to becoming parents as they navigated both emotional and institutional obstacles.
(Yes, this show has somehow been running for five seasons, and entirely too many people have yet to ever even hear of it. Help us fix this!)
The show’s third season concluded with the pair formally adopting Princess (Scarlett Rayner) and her younger brother, Tyler (Cooper Turner). Season 4 then proceeded to flawlessly execute a (difficult!) multi-year time jump, rejoining the characters just as their adopted children reach their teenage years, and start asking serious questions about their birth parents.
Season 5 takes a different leap, introducing Princess and Tyler’s biological mother, Kat (Charlotte Riley), and exploring what her reappearance after such a long absence means for them all.

Here’s the season synopsis.
Season 5 finds Nikki and Jason dealing with the consequences of Princess and Tyler’s biological mother Kat turning up at their doorstep, and the whirlwind of chaos she brings into their settled family life.

Alongside Spall and Smith, the ensemble cast also includes Celia Imrie (The Thursday Murder Club), Darren Boyd (Down Cemetery Road), Siân Brooke (Blue Lights), Phil Davis (Poldark), Gbemisola Ikumelo (Black Ops), and Colin Morgan (Dead and Buried).
The series is written and created by Andy Wolton, with Jim O’Hanlon serving as director. This season’s soundtrack is helmed by Irish artist Orla Gartland, joining a list of artists who have collaborated with the show since its debut, including Guy Garvey, Maisie Peters, Bear’s Den, and BEKA. It is produced by BBC Studios, and executive producers include Wolfton, Josh Cole, Sam Pinnell, and Chris Sussman.
Trying Season 5 will premiere on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, on Apple TV with new episodes airing weekly through the end of August. Seasons 1-4 are now streaming.
