The ‘East of Eden’ Trailer Finds Monsters In Us All
There's a beauty in the truth, even if it is a dreadful beauty.
Netflix has released the trailer for its forthcoming adaptation of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, a sprawling tale that follows the intertwined lives of two families in California’s Salinas Valley from the American Civil War to the end of World War I.
As befits such a decidedly generational tale, this series has its own family legacy behind it. The Netflix drama hails from Zoe Kazan (Ruby Sparks), the granddaughter of famed director Elia Kazan (A Streetcar Named Desire), who previously adapted the novel as a feature film (and quasi-James Dean vehicle) in 1955. Her take on the story seems to foreground the novel’s infamous anti-heroine, Cathy Ames (Florence Pugh). Readers and literary critics have spent decades debating Cathy’s motivations and agency — or lack thereof — and it seems like this series will have plenty to say on that score. (Or, perhaps more accurately, allow Cathy to speak for herself on the subject.)
It’s Cathy’s voice we hear throughout the trailer — “I believe there are monsters born in this world to human parents. A monster is a variation from the accepted normal” — ominously intoning lines that echo the novel. But their meaning feels drastically different when they’re put in her mouth and laid over an uncomfortable introduction to the Trask family and the pair of Cain-and-Abel-esque brothers at the center of the story.

Alongside Pugh, the series’ stacked cast features Martha Plimpton (Prime Target) as Faye, Ciarán Hinds (The Dry) as Samuel Hamilton, Tracy Letts (A House of Dynamite) as Cyrus Trask, Christopher Abbott (Bring Them Down) as Adam Trask, Joe Anders (Lee) as Aron Trask, Mike Faist (West Side Story) as Charles Trask, Hoon Lee (Warrior) as Lee, and Joseph Zada (The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping) as Cal Trask.
Kazan wrote the screen adaptation and serves as a co-showrunner alongside Jeb Stuart (Vikings: Valhalla). Garth Davis (Top of the Lake) splits helming duties with Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre (Lady Chatterley’s Lover). Pugh, Stuart, Kazan, and Davis are all executive producers, alongside Antoine Douiahy and Zack Hayden.
East of Eden premieres with all episodes on Thursday, October 1, 2026, on Netflix.
