Netflix's 'Pride & Prejudice' Teaser Gives Us a First Look at Lizzie & Darcy for a New Era
Into every generation, a new adaptation of Jane Austen's classic romance is born.
It's a truth universally acknowledged that every generation must have a Pride and Prejudice of its own. Gen X-ers have the sprawling six-hour BBC adaptation from 1996 starring Colin Firth (Lockerbie: A Search for Truth) and Jennifer Ehle (The Vampire Lestat). Millennials claim the 2005 feature film with Kiera Knightley (Black Doves) and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession). Now, Gez Z gets a Lizzie and Darcy of their very own with Netflix's forthcoming limited series starring Emma Corrin (The Crown) and Jack Lowden (Slow Horses).
The six-part series is being touted as a "faithful, classic adaptation" of the classic novel, a declaration that will assuredly soothe the fears of fans still reeling from the streamer's swing at Persuasion, a film that badly understood the spirit (and heroine) of that novel. If the first teaser is anything to go by, it might actually succeed.
The teaser is predominantly vibes-based — feel the yearning, people! — but does give us our first real look at this latest iteration of Lizzie and Darcy. She's on a roof, brooding. He's on a horse, also brooding. A match made in heaven, obviously.
Here is Netflix's version of the synopsis:
Austen’s second novel follows Elizabeth Bennet, an unmarried woman and the second of five daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet from Hertfordshire, near London. Their home can only be inherited by males in the family, so the pressure is on for the daughters to marry well or risk losing everything. While out in society, Elizabeth interacts with single men like Mr. Darcy, an outwardly curmudgeon who is misunderstood. The novel tackled the issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of the British Regency.
Alongside Corrin and Lowden, the series cast is bursting with familiar faves, including Olivia Colman (The Roses) and Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat) as Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, with Freya Mavor (Marie Antoinette) as Jane, Rhea Norwood (Heartstopper) as Lydia, and newcomers Hopey Parish and Hollie Avery as Mary and Lydia, respectively. Also in leading roles are Daryl McCormack (The Woman in the Wall) as Mr. Bingley, Siena Kelly (Domino Day) as Caroline Bingley, Jamie Demetriou (Barbie) as Mr. Collins, Louis Partridge (Enola Holmes) as Mr. Wickham, and Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve) as Lady Catherine de Bourg.
Supporting cast members include Rosie Cavaliero (Bookish) as Lady Lucas, Anjana Vasan (We Are Lady Parts) and Sebastian Armesto (Gangs of London) as Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner, plus Saffron Coomber (Three Little Birds) and James Dryden (Time Bandits) as Mr. and Mrs. Hurst. Justin Edwards (The Franchise) is Sir William Lucas, James Northcote (The Last Kingdom) is Colonel Forster, Eloise Webb (Sanditon) is Harriet Forster, and Isabella Sermon (Jurassic World) will be Georgiana Darcy.
The series is written by Everything I Know About Love author Dolly Alderton, with Euros Lyn (The Radleys) directing and Lisa Osborne producing. Alderton, Lyn, and Corrin are all executive producers alongside Laura Lankester, Will Johnston, and Louise Mutter for Lookout Point.
The six-part adaptation will arrive on Netflix at a still-to-be-determined date this Fall.
