‘The Galway Bay Murders’ Trailer Puts Kate Mulgrew in Charge

Move over, Alicia Silverstone; another major American TV figure from the mid-1990s is going to Ireland to solve crimes. Kate Mulgrew, best known as the first woman to ever captain a starship in a Star Trek series, is jumping on the cozy crime bandwagon and popping across the pond to solve a few murders in The Galway Bay Murders.
Unlike Silverstone, for whom Irish Blood was her first comeback vehicle, Mulgrew has already had multiple career revivals since her Star Trek days. She was a major force as Red in Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, and more recently she was in the critically acclaimed Dope Thief. Also, Mulgrew didn’t need an American production studio like Acorn TV to come up with a reason to film her in Ireland; instead, she called fellow Star Trek alum and Irish actor Colm Meaney.
We first heard about Mulgrew and Meaney teaming up for an RTÉ series back in April 2026. He’s the local head of the Gardaí; she’s a New York detective who retires to Ireland after a terrible career-ending trauma and winds up consulting on a case. At the time, the show was going under the working title of The Yank, which was honestly terrible, and we are all very thankful someone fixed that. In fact, we’re quite pleased with how it’s turned out.
Here’s the synopsis:
Set on the west coast of Ireland, the series follows seasoned NYPD detective Nora Savage as she takes a career break after a traumatic event and moves to her family home in Galway on an exchange program with An Garda Síochána. Expecting a change of pace, Nora is unexpectedly pulled into a murder investigation involving a female climate activist. As she goes head-to-head with a ruthless environmental magnate who puts those closest to her at risk, she is forced to confront her personal demons. As the investigation builds to a tense, savage climax, it drives Nora and the squad into a thrilling hunt for the killer.

(RTE)
Alongside Mulgrew (Star Trek: Voyager) and Meaney (Star Trek: The Next Generation), the cast will also include another Trek alum: Cillian O’Sullivan (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds).
The rest of the main roster includes John Connors (The Gentlemen), India Mullen (Normal People), Jack Rowan (Noughts + Crosses), Clinton Liberty (House of the Dragon) and Dervla Kirwan (House of Guinness).
Writer Eithne Verling conceived of and wrote the series specifically for Mulgrew; it is her first television drama script. Directing duo Joe Lawler and Christine Molloy (Kin) helmed all episodes. David Crean and Dermot Horan executive produce for RTÉm alongside Kate McColgan for Screen Ireland.
The Galway Bay Murders premieres on RTÉ on Thursday, November 5, 2026. The series does not yet have an American distributor, but we expect that to be rectified soon.
