‘Ann Droid’ Renewed for Season 2, Still Lacks U.S. Distributor
There will be more 'Ann Droid' to come on the BBC. Now it just needs an American distributor.
Ann Droid has apparently struck a chord with BBC viewers and with Americans – it’s a rare show that people start messaging us about before it’s landed a U.S. distributor, let alone debuted in the U.K. But we’ve been getting messages about it since June, and we’re sad to report that, as of this writing, we still don’t have a line on where the show will wind up.
However, we are sure it is going to come here eventually, and not just because Diane Morgan is a known quantity due to the success of her Philomena Cunk mockumentaries on Netflix. The series has been a massive hit for the BBC, with the key demographic of 16–34-year-olds tuning in in numbers matched only by Season 1 of The Celebrity Traitors.
The show is catching attention for good reason. It’s a story about a family who can’t afford full-time eldercare for an aging parent, and have found the Tory-hobbled NHS is no longer adequate to meet their needs. The solution is a gadget the NHS is piloting because it’s run out of human workers: Ann Droids, robotic nurses somewhere between living Apple Watches and moveable stair lifts. Of course, no technology is perfect, and our AnnDroid Z58/100 (who answers to Linda, thank you very much), turns out to be as problem-making as she is problem-solving.
The Ann Droid series premiere has been available for less than two months and just recently hit 8.1 million views. This is not just a major ratings win, but one that shows it has legs, since it’s still picking up viewers weeks after Season 1 ended. That’s the kind of show everyone wants to have in their library – from Netflix to BritBox, no one argues with shows that bring in viewers months after they’ve aired, and it makes the series a very attractive pickup.
How long it takes Ann Droid an American streaming home remains to be seen, but we’re hoping to see it arrive over here before the end of 2026.
There’s no synopsis for Season 2 as yet, but that’s fine because Americans still haven’t gotten to see Season 1.
In the first series, Sue was bought a second-hand Ann Droid Z58/100 Basic Eldercare Robot by her son Michael to help her live independently, so he could focus on repairing his marriage. Reluctant to utilize Linda at first, they soon develop an unlikely and poignant friendship as Sue learns to navigate the later part of her life, no longer alone, but with Linda – whose catchphrase is ‘Sue, Sue, Sue’ – by her side.
Diane Morgan (Cunk on Cinema) stars as the AnnDroid Z58/100, alongside Sue Johnston (TrueLove) as Sue and Paul Ready (Motherland) as her son, Michael. All three are expected to return for Season 2.
Morgan co-wrote the series with Sarah Kendall (The Other One), with director Joe Roberts (Power of Parker) helming all three installments and Pippa Brown producing. Morgan executive produces along with Brown and Shane Allen for Boffola Pictures.
Ann Droid Season 2 is expected to film in late 2026 or early 2027, and debut on the BBC. By then, someone in the U.S. had better’ve picked it up.
