‘Black Ops’ Season 3 Adds Alex Jennings to Roster

A sliver of good news on a day the BBC makes painful and drastic budget cuts.

It’s not an easy day at the BBC, with the announcement of over 100 layoffs and the (re)shuttering of BBC Three as a linear network. Thankfully, just like last time, BBC Three isn’t actually canceled or planning to disappear. It’ll become a major hub on iPlayer (again, just like last time) and the BBC’s main flagship streaming destination.

As we’ve noted previously, BBC Three is also one of the main feeders of British shows to Hulu in the States. It’s a deal left over from before Disney+ bought out its competitors to gain full control of the streaming service, back when Hulu was its own product. It’s also been a very successful partnership, producing hits like Normal People and Conversations with Friends, along with critical darlings like Obituary, Extraordinary, and Such Brave Girls.

However, post-merger, Hulu has gained a plethora of British shows from Disney+’s U.K. arm. It also expanded its own overseas ties, picking up a few BBC One hits along the way, such as Am I Being Unreasonable and Black Ops, both of which are rounding into their third seasons. While Am I Being Unreasonable is still filming, Black Ops has finished principal photography for its upcoming third season and revealed the major guest stars who’ve signed on.

Here’s the Season 3 synopsis:

Chaotic but lovable duo Dom and Kay are back, and they’ve been given their first undercover mission by MI5, with Dom as leader and Kay her undercover ‘asset’. Their mission: to uncover the identities of a secretive far-right terror group via a shady museum director selling off artifacts to fund them. But a figure from Kay’s past –a past he’d rather forget –resurfaces threatening the mission and Dom and Kay’s friendship. The pair once again battle to keep the nation safe in a high-wire caper taking in billionaires, a windsurfing incident, and an impromptu trip to the Peak District.

Season 3 once again stars Gbemisola Ikumelo (Roadkill) as Dom and Hammed Animashaun (The Wheel of Time) as Kay, with Akemnji Ndifornyen (Leonardo) reprising his role as Tevin. Season 3 adds Alex Jennings (The Crown) as controversial historian Dr. Charles Dunstable, and Denise Black (Rivals) as the pathologically unhelpful, rather jaded, long-term MI5 employee Jean. Other guest cast members turning up for Season 3 include CJ Beckford (Maigret), Al Nash (Fool Me Once), and Neil Bell (Peaky Blinders).

Ikumelo and Ndifornyen created and executive produced the series, and co-wrote all episodes with Joe Tucker and Lloyd Woolf. Ikumelo, Ndifornyen, Tucker, and Woolf executive produce alongside Josh Cole for BBC Studios.

Black Ops Season 3 filming has officially wrapped, and the series is expected to debut on the BBC before the end of 2026 and follow on Hulu in 2027. Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming in the U.S. on Hulu.
