The second episode of Ludwig Season 2 opens at a wedding. It’s a gorgeous day at the spectacular North Mymms Park in Hertfordshire, a Tudor mansion only a few miles from London. As the guests perform country dances, a stranger who doesn’t look well arrives, unsteady on his feet, with a visible bloodstain on his shirt. In a cross between other gory tragedies such as Macbeth and Lucia di Lammermoor, the dance ends; the shocked guests notice the intruder as he falls to the ground, and this wedding will now become memorable for all the wrong reasons.

DC Ethan Cole and DC Caitlin Sullivan, in the evidence tent with the body, have bagged a blood-soaked cummerbund. Ethan is convinced that the weapon was a dinner knife, purely because there are so many around. DI Russell Carter calls to tell John that there’s been a stabbing with 30 witnesses present, none of whom noticed anything.

John and Lucy are grocery shopping, bickering because he’s chosen items she disapproves of, specifically, choc ice. She’s also grumpy because she can’t persuade John to ask Russell what he knows about Holly Pinder’s murderer, Adam Newsum. However, she intends to interview last week’s witness, MP Joanne Kemper, after John reveals that Kemper was acquainted with James. Lucy drives him to the crime scene; today, in addition to the habitual ankle socks, she sports a tiny skirt, as though she is determined to get as much use out of her early-teenage wardrobe as she can. But she’s impressed by the house and the setting, and Russell is impressed by the skirt.
